As I said in one of my previous posts the Dynamat over those holes will kill a lot of high frequency noise from the rear. The proper part would likely do a better job as it is more ridged.
On each side of the trunk there are two close side by side short vertical bars bolted.

The dampening mats I got do not have holes in them for these bars/mounting points. Am I suppposed to cut the mats or did I get the wrong items?

Did you cut these holes:

When i fitted mine, I just slowly and carefully cut the holes as close to the brackets as I could.

I don't believe that those braces are in the other 2 series cars. Just ours so you have to cut!

First off, thank you guys so much for providing this info. I love my M2 but always felt the road noise on the freeway was unacceptable for a 60k car. It was so bad that it was somewhat comparable to my S2k, which we all know is loud. Looking at the diagrams the M2 looks bare compared to the f22 in terms of sound insulation.

One question.

SOUND INSULATING WHEEL HOUSING REAR LEFT: 51487334357
SOUND INSULATING WHEEL HOUSING REAR RIGHT: 51487334358

SOUND INSULATION TRUNK LEFT 51487296055
SOUND INSULATION TRUNK RIGHT 51487296056

Are both of these parts (sound insulation trunk and sound insulating rear housing) pictured here in the trunk? the part that covers the side of the trunk looks to be one piece from the pictures, but from the description of the parts sounds like two pieces combined in the sides of the trunk. Am i right or is one of the parts not pictured?

You need a 2 series Gran Tourer.

Generally speaking, the noise level in my '18 LCI doesn't bother me. However, over Memorial Day weekend I drove 1479 miles in about 23 hours. I enjoyed every minute but this does have me considering working to reduce the cockpit sound level.

Anyone care to talk about the things that have made the biggest difference for them?

TIA

I run ear plugs on long trips.

Reduces the fatigue.

I love my M2.

<chuckle> That would do it and if I was running alone, it would be a decent option although it would have a negative impact on situational awareness.

Great thread everyone. This is awesome stuff. I think I will do just the rear wheel well ones. This should do what I want and can always add later on.

I wish Bridgestone would put that foam strip inside their performance tires. Im running M3 rims and wide tires. PSS are really noisy.

It seems that the cheapest price for these is from getBMWparts.com at a total of $162 plus shipping. That's a lot of money, but if it makes the car a bit more liveable, money well spent.

<edit>

I went back through the entire thread and also ordered 41-00-7-294-289 & 90, for the side holes by the rear seats, plus all the clips, and spares, putting me at $241 which is peanuts for a $64,000 car.

Thanks everyone for the research, comments, part numbers and help!

Those rear wheelwell covers: do they need the rear seats removed to install? If that's the case I may just do the 3m self stick sound deadening in the trunk without removing the seats

Rear seat and trim will have to come out, but that shouldn't be quick and easy.

I am going to go this route as well. If it drops the noise level a few db, I will call it money well spent for long trips.

I took yesterday off and spent a large portion of it ripping out the interior of my car and installing the parts listed above. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread with part numbers, advice, pictures and experiences. Here's my report:

I printed off a couple of pages from the BMW TIS to assist me in properly removing several trim parts. I have a bad history of getting annoyed, frustrated and impatient, which leads to broken plastic bits. This time, I broke nothing and did not have any parts left over.

Removing the rear seats is really much easier than I thought - just pull up on the front edge of the bottom, and pull it out. The seat backs don't really need to come out, but you will need to remove the bolts holding in the backs and the bolts holding in the seat belts briefly, to fit the insulation around them. Easy-peasy.

The biggest challenge for me was getting the wiring harnesses out of the way enough to put the insulation behind them, as others did here. The driver's side wasn't too bad, but I just couldn't get the passenger side to work (I didn't want to remove some of the stuff that had grommets going through the inner body panels) partly due to my impatience and I was getting tired (it was 90 degrees here yesterday, and my garage amplifies the humidity). But I figured, no one will see it except some lucky tech the next time something goes wrong with the car.

While I was in there, I put some Dynamat over the rear wheel wells, inside the inner body panels. Plenty of room in there to put down the material and roll it in. I'm not sure how much that will help, but it surely won't hurt.

I did not bother with a before and after DBA reading, as all I have is an inaccurate phone app. However, it does appear (and let's hope it's not all the placebo effect) that all of this work has taken off some of the edge from the road noise.

Again, thanks to everyone that contributed to the thread.

Great job, you guys inspire me in my quest for a "Serenity Now" - like vehicle.

I'm going buy me some Dynamat in bulk and attempt this mod by the weekend..

Since I've done this and driven the car a bit more, I've begun to appreciate more just how effective it is. I can also hear more noise from the front of the car, and wondering what it was that you guys added that helped. Something about a door seal that was terribly difficult to install. Can anyone give me more detail?

Take a look at this thread: https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1265176. On page 2 I give the part numbers of the fender-to-body seals, where I purchased them, and provide some thoughts on their effectiveness.

I did not find them difficult to install. As I recall, I used a wooden ruler to assist in poking the seal in the cavity between the front fender and door.

I also installed the door seal as it was inexpensive and very easy. I did it at the same time I did the ASD delete and can't really say how much impact the seal itself actually had.

Thanks Prof! I don't know why the "appreciate" button is disabled on your post, but I do appreciate the help.

After installing the rubber door seal and you open the wide, it might begin creaking, as the edge of the inner door rubs on this molding.

I suggest you pick up a can of rubber lubricant and apply it generously, it completely eliminates squeals and rattles..
