US Resident Purchasing Canadian Sunroof M2?

I buried this question in an existing not-quite-relevant thread, so let me start a new one. Not having a sunroof is a deal-breaker for me, and the pictures I've seen of the Oz and Canada M2s look just like the sunroof of my M3.

What problems might be encountered in buying a new sunroof M2 from a dealership in, say, Vancouver and driving it home to California? Does anyone know of any tax/fee or regulatory issues that could trip this plan up? I can imagine people in Seattle and Vancouver doing this in the ordinary course of business, so could it work? Has anyone done it?

There is another discussion on this and the short answer is you can't. A BMW dealer in Canada is not allowed to sell a new vehicle to a non-Canadian resident. Not to say there may not be creative ways around it but it won't be easy or practical.

As gthal said, the short and sweet of it is you can't. See here for thorough discussion:

http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1287600

Now, you could get a used one in a private sale, but it doesn't necessarily mean it'll be approved for use in the US - in addition, the MY16 cars didn't have them, so you'd have to wait for a used MY17.

Last but not least, you'd lose the warranty.

I had a E36 M3. I now have a M235i, and the only difference is, the latter car has a clear tinted moonroof vs. a solid one like the 95 M3. I vote we (the U.S.) invade and overtake Canada. j/k

No need. Just wait until Trump is elected and we'll gladly take as many American refugees as possible.

My dealer was able to use the Canadian option code and get mine with the sunroof.

I wish.

Doesn't mean I wont continue to try.

Well there are used ones in Canada that you could look at buying, might still be worth a few calls, although all of them are charging above MSRP for used cars:

Why won't they? They make it. I would think you could do a copo style deal and get one. Why doesn't BMW offer it here when all their other cars have them?

Because
The USA product planners (and I spoke to one at the Chicago Auto Show) said that they want to keep the "spirit" of the car and not "ruin" it with a sunroof.

Very sad.

Told me "no way in hell" are you getting the car with a sunroof in the US.

Was really a really enjoyable moment. Not.

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard from an auto manufacturer. Are you sure he was an actual BMW rep?
They know 90% of the M2's sold will never sniff a race track right? Dumb, stupid, idiotic, moronic, inane, senseless, ludicrous etc etc, you can come up with your own synonyms.

It's a freaking M2, not a GT3 RS. Talk about self absorbed, lol BMW.

My last three 3-series had a sunroof and originally thought I'd never buy a car without one. Although I would have ordered one if it was an option in the U.S., I decided I'd rather have an M2 without it than a M240i with. To tell your the true, I really don't miss it as the car is a blast to bomb around in.

Good customer relations when it can be done in the USA and we are the only country who does not offer it as an option.
