Give the VIN to a BMW dealer and get a detailed service history. Make sure it's had its break-in and subsequent scheduled services, plus anything else that's been done.

The Carfax (available on the dealer site) shows 3 previous owners and no dealer services at all. Bought in Mass, sold 2 years and 7500 miles later in OH, then sold again in OH 2 months later??? That's all a bit of a red flag for me. It might be a great car, but it's a history that would concern me until I saw the BMW service history (if it has one)

Personally, if I'm spending 43K on a car, it's gonna be pretty much perfect, vehicle history included.

Especially when this is also in OH for only 3K more and it's CPO https://www.prestonbmw.com/inventory...1h9c51hv786696
Car is spotless. Inside and out. It seems that the original owner sold it to a dealer or leasing company. So only two owners. I’m checking with my bmw dealer in the morning for maintenance history. Guy traded it in on a Porsche Macan. Clear bra up front and on mirrors and door edges. Drives amazing.
I have a local m specialty dealer near me called enthusiast auto group who buys m cars all over the country. They may have been the one who bought it.

Found the service history. First oil change done at 1550 miles
Second one done at around 6400 miles
Third was done at 8500 miles by the second owner at a European shop because it was not free through bmw since he was second owner.
Car is only a two prior owner vehicle. A leasing company bought it from the original owner and leased it to the second owner. He traded it for 2 Porsche’s 8 months later. No warranty claims on the vehicle at all. Seems to be a good one. Also has the 2 year extended maintenance plan when the four years is up in 10-28-2020. I think I’m buying. Thanks for the replies.

38,000 miles and 22 track days and not a problem from mine. These cars seem pretty solid to me. I drove my E90 224,000 miles before I sold it so I am not afraid of BMW reliability. They aren't a Honda so they need some care and feeding but most will be just fine. The ones that aren't will post on the internet a 1,000 times.

When do they replace spark plugs and brake fluid? Haven't been able to get a straight answer

I requested both after I hit 30k miles. Not sure if they would have done them had I not requested it.

The newTIS site has a chart that says at the 3rd oil change as well, just haven't heard many people mentioning it. Thanks for the letting me know!

I'll chime in...these are great cars as long as you stay on top of the maintenance and use quality components.

My back ground: Automotive Tech with 15 years in the industry, two years of which were with BMW at a dealer. I can tell you that this is one of the most solid cars BMW have made in a while. Recently left the Subaru product line for a M2 and do not regret it at all. Yes, it is not a "S" engine and it shares components with other models. The product sharing is not a bad thing by keeping costs in control and more availability.

All in I am confident in the chassis...hell, I bought one.

I would disagree a little about this comment. Honda has run into several major quality issues since the mid 2000's. Most current issue is the crankcase ventilation issue on the new Accord's engine causing engines to seize (albeit rare).

Example: My daily is a 2005 Honda Accord which had a charging/starting issue. The BCU controlled the voltage output, but there is a known issue with the Engine Harness and overvoltage module. Thus, replacing the alternator, starter, or BCU would have no positive effect. The repair was a replacement of the engine wiring harness, overvoltage module, and junction box in the engine compartment. Total pain and for the normal consumer it would cost about $2k for all the repairs. I know, this is just one data point but I can tell you as a former tech the days of Honda reliability have been over for a while.

My 2017 (delivered 9/23/2016, 19,000 miles) had a brake fluid change a few weeks ago per the Service Interval Indicator. I'm replacing the oil & filter every 5,000 miles.

The old adage used to be: Price, speed, reliability - pick 2.

Can't ever have it all, but cars are more reliable and faster than ever... I guess that does come at a cost (literally) though.

Unlike some other BMWs that came before it with sudden catastrophic failures (rod bearings, anyone?), regular maintenance should make these cars fairly reliable.

You can disagree all you want. There is plenty of data that shows objectively that a Honda is more reliable than a BMW and needs less costly maintenance. I love my BMWs and drove my e90 225,000 miles and did all the work needed to keep to going.

2017 m2, the stock fan belt blew, the cords from it wrapped around the crank pulley and then pushed the crank seal into the timing chains. This caused an severe oil leak. I had shut down car immediately when I heard the belt blow (I thought it was exploded boost pipe as it was a loud pop). Towed car into dealership. Warranty covered it all. But they did have to drop front subframe to remove oil pan to clean out debris, then reseal the front crank seal. So quite a repair for a blown belt. There is potential of debris plugging the oil intake screen, or losing all your oil from this, but pretty sure it would pop a CEL for low oil or low oil pressure if that happened.
Make sure you inspect belt as she gets older. Mine failed with approx 20,000 on it, but who knows may have been a bad belt or something out of alignment. It’s been fine since. At 50,000 now with numerous autocross and a few track days.

2016-2018 M2 Reliable

Picked my 2016 up at the Perfomance Center in South Carolina in April 2016.. Currently has 35,000 miles . Daily driver. Just put winter tires on for the winter. Tracked 3 or 4 days a year. No issues, just consumables gas oil tires and brake pads

My M2 got two repairs.

1. They try to update the Apple Car play, it failed completely and the car won't even drive anymore. Then it took them a good few weeks to get it all resolved by replacing the computer.

2. Now they temperature sensor is dead, and they said it is the BMW KOMBI Module ... or something with the instrument cluster etc... The memory is not readable etc and so the temperature reading is always off.

I have some bad luck with the electronic side... That's the lemon I guess.

With that said, may I ask for your opinion how reliable the 2016-2018 M2 are? ie. electronics, engine and manual trans? I heard that the n55 engine is very reliable, but what about the other parts of the vehicle?

If I maintain it religiously (i.e, on top of the maintenance schedule), can I expect it run smoothly up to e.g. 100k miles? 150k miles? without major repairs? I apologize in advance if my questions appear naive. Still new here in the BMW world.

Much appreciated for your insight.

Thank you!

UPDATE: Someone PM'ed me "Wouldn't it be great if we have a database or spreadsheet of this for reference..?"
I just created a spreadsheet so folks can feel free to document issues they observe with their 2016-2018 M2. Just in case people want to share their issues and fixes here. Here is the link to it:

2017 M2 MT here and the only issue was the amplifier going fubar at 29 K miles. Replaced under warranty otherwise car is rock solid. Oh, and the dealer replaced the spark plugs at 29K along with the normal oil and filter and wipers and air filter. No probs other than the dreaded screeching amp.

20K miles on my 2018. Daily driver plus track. Running a stage 1 tune. (Bootmod3)

Only issues I had were a rattle in my M Performance Exhaust (replaced under warranty even though it wasn't dealer/port installed).

A few times I've noticed that every warning imaginable goes off in my car. Turning it off and back on seems to make it go away. Not sure what's causing it, but it's oonly happened like twice.

Could be the tune, or maybe some coding I did. Or possibly something wonky with the AIM Solo2 Dl I have jacked into my CANbus.

Either way, it hasn't caused any problems that I can tell, no limp mode or anything. Simply shutting it down and restarting cleared it both times.

EDIT: OH, almost forgot. During the winter when it gets cold, my idrive screen becomes possessed periodically. Randomly starts navigating through menus, changing the radio station, calling my ex wife..

This is a known issue as far as I'm aware. Plan on taking my car in this winter if it starts doing it again to get the screen replaced.

2018 M2 at 28k miles (rented regularly on Turo so it def. gets driven hard):

1) RR tail lamp replaced, seeing others report this issue in this thread too.
2) Exhaust actuator clip replaced, somehow disappeared.

My personal 2019 M2C at 5k miles has been flawless.

Overall I feel pretty confident about these cars.

'18 with 24k miles. Just had the horn replaced and both tail light assemblies. They replaced the spark plugs and filter without request, I was pleasantly surprised about the plugs. The horn and turn signals were known issues, so I was glad they were tackled while under warranty. Other than that, no issues so far.

2017 @26k, my car is currently in pieces at the dealer. 1st gear shutter that has been going on for some time. they are saying its covered under the maintenance plan that of course expired the middle of last month. the internet is filled with individuals that had this taken care of under warranty. still have 7/32 on the fronts, 5/32 on the rear and zero track days. car has never seen red line, its my daily driver. I have a 911 for the track. If they don't step up to the plate I am going to have a really hard time with this. the only reason I am driving this car is that audi stopped bringing in manuals. 11 audis over 3 decades and zero issues. sorry to vent but this will be my last bmw, the dealer support is just not what I am used to. I will create a new post with the outcome.
