Found the source of the tapping sound. It seems like the HPFP is also pulsing the low-pressure side with pressure pulses. This is making quite the racket in the fuel tank. Yes the metal fuel pump cover and rear seat dampen the sound significantly, but it would seem that its resonating through the floor boards into the cabin.
The sound disappears at about 1000 RPM.

Talked to Spool and they said this issue is primarily on E-series N55's because our cars do not have a damper in the fuel tank, while F-series do. There is a damper in the HPFP itself but its capability to dampen is reduced to provide additional flow rate. They are going to look into a custom damper solution. I did not install their optional fuel filter which they indicated also acts like a damper.
A quick google search shows that fuel system pulsation dampers are out there, but I did not find anything that would be "bolt-in" with AN or other standard fittings. Glad to see that Spool is helping out with this.

Damn that's unfortunate. There are pretty cheap dampers for sale on the market, the only issue is they use push style fittings so you have to custom make some lines to convert it to AN. Then oteiker clamp the ends of the damper. I did this for my sti because it was way cheaper than buying such a simple fuel stumble delete kit from Cobb.

I installed a Fuel-It stage 2 LPFP today and the hammering sound went down significantly, by 70% if I were to put a number on it. Much more bearable now.

Pure sent me the wrong part, so I probably won’t get to mine until after you’re up & running. |

Exactly, parts are collecting dust in the garage as we wait for the HPFP . We'll be busy installing everything once this hits the doorstep. I trust that Pure is stepping up to make this right and overnight you the correct part.
Honestly, felt bad emailing Dorch to inquire about the order (it's been a month now) given the current state of things. Received an email in less than an hour. Take care ... |

Received the pump on Friday (woohoo). Started the install today (took lots of photos) and everything went perfect up until it was time to torque down the pump to the flange. Added a light coat of assembly lube to the bolts and aligned the pump and threaded the t30's by hand (90 degrees back and forth) until the pump was bottomed out and the bolts stopped turning. Using a Craftsman digital torque wrench, husband torqued in 90 degree rotations back and forth. Then it happened, the bolt (facing fuel rail) clocked up to 12-13nm then dropped back to 11. He immediately stopped. I could tell he was not happy. Removed the pump and the flange is borked. A nice thin piece of metal threaded out when he threaded the bolt in then back out. No idea why as he was ridiculously careful as everything indicated we should be careful at this point. Husband emailed Chris at Dorch and got an immediate response (love these guys). A new flange is being sent out. Reason I wrote this is he indicated they might back the torque specs back from 15 to 12nm as this has happened before. Just an FYI when you install yours.. Also, I don't think the directions mentioned but the allen bolt (knock sensor) is 5mm. --M |

Your very welcome. I took a lot of hi-res photos of the install. If you/anyone has any questions just drop me a PM. Tomorrow we're going to run the low pressure fuel it lines and ethanol sensor. Will do our best to take some good photos of that as well.
Everyone take care and be safe out there. |

Am I the only person reading this and getting envious that a husband and wife are working on their car TOGETHER?
It's hard enough for me to get the wife to agree to me spending time working on the car, and even harder to get her to take an interest when I tell her what I've done on it after the fact. You two are a lucky couple... your husband especially ///Monika!

No, no filter yet .. I was looking around for one that provides adequate flow and serviceability and Spool pissed us off so that's no longer viable. I'm kind of curious where one would be mounted under the car, we'll get a better look today. TBH, we actually good for a couple of months as we still haven't decided on a turbo yet. So in short - we wouldn't run an 'e' blend until then (when tuned).
In the meantime, any suggestions ? Seems odd that Fuel-It doesn't actually offer one that would integrate with their full kit. I see Earls, E85 freaks, Aeromotive etc.. We'd just need the proper dash fittings and barbs. |

This was awesome, thank you so much. Can't help but love these cars and of course - my husband ! Not necessarily in that order (well sometimes).

Been running my ttfs HPFP for about a year and a half, also have stage 2 LPFP and ethanol sensor with upgraded fuel lines. I generally run e50.
I had my injectors fail about a month ago. They have now been replaced, but I'm wondering if it's a coincidence with the ethanol? Car is now at about 30k. I'm looking at an option to add a HPFP inline filter just for some extra peace of mind also, but nothing seems available without heavy modifications. |
