Edit: just got back from a drive. I can hear a difference now. Faint whining at low rpm/low load and more general noise at idle. I think my MPE is too loud to hear much difference under load. Last edited by Anthony1s; 05-09-2019 at 11:55 AM.. |

1) By intended design to keep the motor warm between restarts, the cover traps a lot of heat which ultimately degrades the wiring and hoses under the cover. Anything to lessen the heat damage, the better in my book. 2) I like being able to see/inspect the top of the motor easily for leaks, damage, evidence of rodents, etc. 3) Reduced motor heat soak. 4) Sound improvement. There is definitely more mechanical noise when under moderate to high load and none of the additional noise is ugly noise. I installed the 540 valve cover to clean things are a bit and offer some protection to the exposed wires as it would have been difficult to wrap the wires safely.

How is it held on then the engine cover? Rubber attachments? Do you just lift/pull it up?
So some of you are running with cover minus insulation and others running no engine cover at all? My last car u ran without the engine cover due to an aftermarket intake but got the most engine sound in the cabin by removing the insulation liner under the bonnet |

Just as well it's a quick job - I've just noticed this in the new MOT (UK testing) checklist:
"under-bonnet noise deadening material fitted as original equipment" It's a fail if not fitted. I guess that on mine as the engine cover is still there means it might be ok, but I'll pop the insulation back in just to be on the safe side for the test. |

Bumping this.
I just happened to remove the engine cover today out of curiosity as to what's under there, and lo and behold found this massive foam rubber mat. It took all of three seconds to convince myself that it should be removed for anyone doing track days/autocross/drag strip etc. |

I wonder if it'd be even better to run with the cover off completely? I know in my Acura, all those plastic covers all over the engine bay really held in the heat, and degraded everything terribly. I know it looks cleaner that way, but it definitely holds in the heat, some of the plastic was so brittle it just fell apart in my hands. |

I personally kept the engine cover on. Removal of the insulation sitting directly on top of the entire engine should help immensely. I have never seen an OEM take it that far in regards to quelling engine noise.
