Not feeling MPE. What am I missing?

So picked up my second hand M2 yesterday came w MPE.

MPE sounds fantastic from the outside. Has a nice growling rumble at parking lot speeds - watching the tech take my car for a test drive around the dealer.

But... from the inside it sounds blah. I thought it was the ASD, so I coded it off. This is windows up of course.

1. You dont really hear any good sounds. Just a loud tone, almost "drony". Its like trying to listen to a movie in another room with the doors closed. Just muffled exhaust noise.

2. Around 2500 to 3200 RPM its kinda drony. Gives me a headache. I thought it was the ASD but its actually the MPE! In previous cars, getting on the gas from 2k to 4k RPM would always produce some fun sounds.... not the case here just kinda bland.

My test drive was a 18 w no MPE. There was nothing w MPE to drive.

I had the install checked by a BMW tech, he said it looked correct. Although he knew nothing about the M2 or MPE, so he was pretty useless.

On a positive note, the cold start was not as loud as I thought it was going to be.

Anyways... is there an adjustment? Bad install? Something I'm missing? Any tricks to getting the MPE to sound good INSIDE the cabin? Or atleast get ride of the drony noises, especially on the highway.

I'm sure i"m missing something. Hopefully it better than this... thanks guys

Hey man,

I test drove one with an MPE and was so excited beforehand... only to feel exactly like you. From inside the cabin I was really struggling to hear a difference from the regular M2 (with no MPE) minutes before. So I opted against ticking that box and currently looking at an aftermarket option.

A lot of folk here love it though and each to their own. You might consider pairing it with a Fabspeed or other hi flow catted DP... there’s some clips of that setup and they do sound good.

Good luck!

I find it’s just not loud enough from the inside. I have dp and MPE. People at track days come up to me and tell me the car sounds absolutely amazing, but yet from the inside it’s not so loud. I’ve even taken my neighbours for a drive to explain to them why I don’t think it’s loud at all, while they feel their windows vibrate on cold start!

You looking for a loud angry look at me machine or the sound of a good track car......... here is a video I listened to many times till I made a decision on the MPE. I didn't want an angry all the time exhaust when driving around town..... but i wanted something that sounded sweet and meant business when driven hard in the mountains. Just my useless opinion

Again, sounds fantastic on the outside.

But is there any way to reduce the 3k drone? Or "it is what it is". I think I read in another thread the MPE removes the resonator? If so maybe that's the issue.

I went through this when I was buying my 911. I planned to buy a 991.2 w PSE. As my 991.1 w PSE was awesome.

The 991.2 sounded awesome on the OUTSIDE but inside the cabin it was mute. No engine sound, no exhaust noises. So guys are removing sound dead materials to get more sound inside the car. I bought another 991.1 as the .2 just wasnt exciting enough.

Same issue here w BMW. A combination of a quiet interior plus turbo motor = lame sound on the inside. I think I'll go ahead and deal w ASD for a while now knowing the drone is the MPE not ASD. I think BMW knew this, thus the reason for ASD.

My problem w ASD is its noisy "all the time", I basically want to hear the motor more when I'm on the gas. I think that is more "natual" sounding.

With ASD on at high rev's I did detect a hint of the E46 I-6 "metallic" noises. Its not there w ASD off. Hard to know if its fake or real lol Dang, how awesome it would be to hear this I-6 naturally at high rev's.

Anybody figure out how to code ASD to a % I'll buy your app! I would like to adjust ASD to 50%. 60%. how cool would that be.

I turned my ASD back on. I think I like it better on, since you get some sense of engine noises. Especially during acceleration. Its the MPE that creates all the annoying resonance in the cabin not ASD.

I almost sound like an ASD fan. Ugh. I had it off in my M3 but I had a Fabspeed exhaust that barked like mad, and had zero resonance or drone in the cabin. So I was cool with that.

Question - does the MPE eliminate the stock resonator? I think I read that it does. I wonder if there is a way to add one back on? This would solve the resonance / drone in the cabin.

I'm not sure what's the problem with at least putting the half of both windows down and turn on the heater.

Seriously, I can't M2 in town and on B roads with windows closed. It's the only way to enjoy this wonderful beast.

If you want more noise, add a DP. I have the FS catted DP, MPE and Dinan intake and it makes all the right noises. There is some drone as you noted but not terrible. I found the drone much worse with the ASD. I would get the bypass module instead of coding it out as it still messes with the sound system quality.

How about the Dinan? Reading threads about it on this board, doesnt appear to drone. Maybe not as loud as MPE outside but louder than stock. I could add the res delete and kick it up a bit, still reviews are saying zero drone inside the cabin.

My issue is installation. Since the MPE was port install, I dont have the stock exhaust. And the Dinan doesnt appear to go as far to the engine as MPE.

I agree the Remus is a great sounding set up. I tossed around both but decided on the MPE for the following reasons:

BMW M part
Liked the carbon M tips better and already had them
like the blue tooth activation
1 piece construction so the install was not that complicated to do without a lift
And I actually liked the sound of it on the track.... there was one at the PCD when I got my car
It was the best overall value for my situation based on having the tips and a discount available on the exhaust

The Remus was my second choice, have always like their exhausts

That is just me

I don't know how it compares to te M2, but I had both MPE and Dinan for my M235i. Both were about the same sound level, but IMO the Dinan sounded better, and deeper. The Dinan sounded even more better after I added the resonator delete.

When I get my M2, I will leave it stock for awhile at least, and probably some time after, my 1200 mile service. The stock exhaust seems pretty nice in the videos, but I won't know until I experience the car first hand if I want to leave it that way. If i do decide to go aftermarket, I'm going with Dinan.

M235 & M2 totally different. I had the M235 without then with MPE and now the M2 without and now with MPE. Way different sounds. As for the MPE on the M2, it is deletes the mid pipe resonator ..that is why drone is increased. Also removes the DME controlled flap function

This might be a stupid question but I assume you put the mpe in track more opening up the flaps using the bluetooth controller?

Yes I have. Just got back from a quick spirited run playing around with the exhaust.

Again, OUTSIDE the car MPE sounds fantastic in all modes. And is plenty loud for me. I dont need anything louder outside the car.

What I'm not a fan of is 1) the drone + resonance 2) muted exhaust in the cabin.

I did turn ASD back on, which helps since the engine is so quiet.

Maybe I'll get used to it.

Its the world we live in now with turbo motors. I just traded in a 991.1 GTS where there were NO issues of awesome sound in the cabin with a high revving N/A motor growling right behind your head

I'm still on the fence about the MPE, for me it's all about how it sounds to me while i'm driving not what it sounds like to passers by. So if the cabin noise is not reflecting the MPE i'm not sure if it's worth it.

Decisions Decisions!!
