Then that would certainly make Detroit NAIAS 2016 a leading candidate for the M2 launch, though it seems late to me.

There is no significance to Detroit other than the M boss saying that M models are typically shown about a year after the base model. The M235i came out at this year's (2014) Detroit show.
So just because it isn't shown at the 2015 Detroit show, doesn't mean we have to wait until the 2016 Detroit show to see it. |

You're probably out of luck with that, they'll use the M3 box which has it, to amortize development costs. If it's not going to be a limited-production car, which those in the know claim it isn't, BMW would be stupid not to offer it when it's on everything from a Mini S to a C7.
