Well, the running average of speculated power of the M2 seems to be around 375hp (or a M235i with JB4 tune). Add in the MP LSD for $3200, and the M235i nearly fits the M2 spec minus the body work and standard alcantara.

As the BMW line up goes, I think it would make more sense for BMW to either drop the M235i or detune it toward the N54. With a starting price of $50k, thats near the M235i well-equipped pricing currently. Seems to me, if someone wanted more punch than the 228i, the M2 would fit the bill, even stripped down.

That said, I am even more happy that I bought the M235i when I did, equipped with LSD as well. Should be a great resale if I ever go that route.

Receiving praise from my pregnant (at the time), wife and extremely sensitive father in law.

I hope they still offer the firm fixed suspension for the rest of us. I think they M2 should fill a niche for those of us that want something edgier and more focused. All the new BMWs are already adjustable and soft already, not sure what is gained by making another one soft or gadgetized. There is a gap that was only partially filled by the 1M due to low numbers. I think they should let you check all the gadgets you want including built in Hookah, massaging seats with whirlpool motion and air conditioning. Mood lighting, Bidet, 32 speaker surround sound with 24 inch 3D display in front of the windshield BUT give you the option to leave all that stuff off to make it light, nimble, focused, edgy and with some real freakin' sound a la 1M.

That's my two cents worth.

Now to decide whether I should just lose my $1k deposit and wait for an M2 since it's only a few thousands more...

Translated with google translate. The lines are words that I couldn't see due to the sun glare on the page. Might not be perfect but you get a pretty good idea of what they're trying to say.

A hot number in November 2015 debuted the compact over aviator M2. That he is a real M, the turbocharged 3.0 liter six cylinder with 374 series Guarantees ps and 520 nm. ___ _____ brother M4 come _____ (gauge, suspension parts, _____ steering, brake, four pipe -___ active M differential and _____. Seven- double-clutch transmission. Inner dominate alcantara, aluminum, carbon and dark microfibres. There are separate instruments, special seats, a smaller sport steering wheel. A highlight are the suspected driving services-in 4.3 seconds should it go from zero to 100km / h. madness' just like the award. The basic model with manual will cost around 56,500 euros. The results for M4 a price gap of nearly 16,000 euros and down to the M235i, a difference of 8500 Euros.

More than likely well get a 220 and 228 and lost the 235 all together for the m2. The 228 will probably be renamed 230 with the new engine it'll get soon. So that "fills the void" from a marketing standpoint
I think the only reason a 235 would go away would be because new engines are coming to make a 230 and 240.

BMW has almost always had three us motor variations for 1,2 and 3 series models and I don't expect that to change as each motor upgrade usually brings a a 6-7k delta in the vehicle price.

BMW needs a performance AWD option. Both Audi and Mercedes has them now....if the M2 came with AWD it would be the car for me.

It's a long wait and the M235i is a nice car.

The 75 HP spread, along with the dramatically better suspension on the M2 will be plenty of differentiator to draw M-buyers in to the M2.
No, an speculated 235i would get an 306hp B48 I4T !!!

@Artemis thanks for posting that AutoBild story.

Dack
I like this and it make since. I always wondered and didn't like that they called their newer race car a M235 racing........a M2 race car sounds better. Plus I would guess it would get all the new M3/4 bits and updated engine as an upgrade. I could see either the street M2 or M2 race car in my future!

Read somewhere that BMW plans to discontinue the M235i once the M2 will be released. I think BMW will have no choice, as prospective M235i buyers will likely prefer - for a few (thousand) dollars more - to get the M2.

This seems to make sense, but it doesn't.

There has to be a 235i somewhere, and the name M235i should sell better than 235i, it would be a step back, Mxxxi market should be different than proper Mx market. The first one is the "sportiest" model available of the Series, and the second one is Performance oriented which is a niche.

In countries like mine the M235i comes equipped with everything, and the M2 will too (like every other M model) but in the US, you can pretty much buy an M235i with nothing, just like you buy an M Sport Line. So there is a significant gap for the M235i to prevail. On the contrary, I expect future M340i, M440i, M540i and M650i models. Their Audi equivalent S models, work very well in sales.

It's upside down. The M-Sport and actual M center vents are both trapezoids. The true M vent has its larger edge at the bottom while the M-Sport seems to usually have its larger edge at the top.

SCOTT also said the exact same thing nearly 8 months ago, too. Said the M235i was only a 1st year thing.

Though, he didn't say it was related to the M2... but those who caught the comments knew & understood why.

I heard the M2 will be bigger than the M235i and be able to take higher resolution pictures. I also heard it may bend easier.... Oh wait I was thinking of Apple. Seriously from an automotive industry standpoint all car companies are tapping into every demographic and price range. It makes sense that we will all see more cars with the BMW badge. I guess I was just hoping it wasn't every 6 months.

An optioned Cayman is going to be way, way pricier than an M2. Hell - a well optioned Cayman is actually more than most M4's

Well this is very encouraging news! Will probably just keep the M235i bone stock and just wait for this beast to hit the market. Will most certainly have to wait out the inevitable mark up period...

Not the best looking BMW but should be a fun package.

Will it be a limited run like the 1M was???

The speculation is that it won't be limited. The circumstances that led to the 1M being limited just aren't present here. I've already had one dealer refuse to take deposits on the M2 because they weren't sure if the car would be limited or not.
