Tuning & Cooling Question

So I'm new to this platform and have never really gotten much into modifying a turbo engine. I have an '18 making a slow trek across the country that should be here soon & have been gathering parts to make her more track worthy. I'm specifically looking at the brakes, cooling, & some light suspension mods with a track focus but still perfectly compliant on the streets.

I know I will immediately have an issue with heat here in Texas based on my previous track experience so I figured no reason to wait when I know it will happen. I went with do88's full line of coolers having been happy with their products on my E92 M3 dedicated track car.

The larger intercooler & possible turbo lag is my concern now. It sounds like the way to counteract the lag is through a tune? I'm not real concerned with adding power at this point - but I definitely do not want lag if it can be dealt with & want to have the full benefit of my upgraded cooling. So my question is would a tune be of any value here - and if so what would be recommended? I'm not chasing a peak hp number or anything like that - I want safe, reliable power that is track and street friendly.

Other question would be on downpipes. The car has MPE already on it & I'm reading that adding a downpipe could induce drone. I'm not opposed to volume (to a point) but I definitely do not want drone since it will be street driven. Will not running a downpipe (would do 300cel) be an issue with a suitable tune - or have any impact on the cooling?

Thanks!

I am running Active Autowerke's FMIC, downpipe and track tune. Have done 7 track days so far, 4 of them in 95-100deg heat (this at altitude as well, so cooling has to work harder) and touch wood the setup has been epic. No issues whatsoever with heatsoak, fueling or otherwise.

Highly recommend the Active track tune. It might not be as powerful as other street tunes out there, but for me at least it's guaranteed great performance on track session after session with a nice power bump over stock.

I recommend a 5" intercooler. Wagner, Active Autowerke and VRSF all offer a suitable option that will handle IAT without any added turbo lag

Awesome - much appreciated. I'll definitely take a look at their tune.

I have a Active tune and FMIC. Fab speed downpipe as well. No issues with heat at the track. Car is very fun to drive.

With regards to cooling, I can tell you that the stock system is pretty much trash when pushed to the limit. Good call on the cooling upgrades.

I've gotten the CSF oil cooler and will be getting their DCT cooler and DO88's auxiliary cooler upgrade and then finally the CSF radiator upgrade.

With what I've gotten so far I haven't had any issue or oil temps spiking above 105C, which is when the car's thermostat apparently switches on the active cooling for the oil/coolant.

With regards to tune + lag, I'd suggest you get all bolt-ons for the M2 at once and top them off with a Bootmod3 tune; it offers you a lot of features and the power delivery on it is superb. My intercooler recommendation is the Wagner Evo 2 Competition; simply a superb product. Chargepipes are almost all the same, I've gotten the ER ones and downpipes more or less the same thing and I have the ER downpipe.

I almost forgot to mention, the weather in Lebanon during Summer is extremely humid on the coast, and pretty hot too, with daytime temperatures reaching 35-36C. I commute almost every day from Beirut (sea-level) to the nearby mountains (1250m above sea-level) and never ran into an issue with cooling in either location.

Jason,

See my comments below.

I'm not chasing a peak hp number or anything like that - I want safe, reliable power that is track and street friendly.

I upgraded all the cooling components to make sure it’s reliable on track. All CSF brand, oil cooler, radiator, IC and ER Chargepipe. Upgrade to the TTFS HPFP with their tune. So far so good.

I have MPE with Fabspeed 200 cell downpipe. No drone. You’re welcome to come check it out.

Thanks![/QUOTE]

Seen some about the fuel issues - definitely need to read up on it. Where you running into issues with the stock setup?
Went ahead and got bm3 so hopefully find a map that I like there.

Good to hear about no drone. Volume within reason? Might have to take you up on hearing it.

The reason that I got the HPFP was to help with fueling as I was looking at the Pure Turbo Stage II kit. But I think adding the WMI kit and a E30 tune should be enough power for me.

Have you considered only doing track work in the cooler part of the year? I ask as the last time I was at DFW it snowed (and the weather stations were saying how this brought the total for the season up to over 3'...)

This was late April you understand.

Key word *should* - I know how that goes with me

WMI - thinking that might be the next step if I'm still not satisfied with temps after replacing the coolers?

So, would not say an April snow is very representative of our typical weather here - and maybe they meant 3' was the total in DFW's recorded history? Will be doing more morning tracking during the hotter months but even then it's already pretty warm.

Oh, the time before is was over 100F, but that was August.

No, the 3' appeared to be the total for just for the winter of 2009/10...

The CSF 4 piece cooling / power solution is the best bang for your buck w/ drop-in fitment.
Radiator
DCT cooler
Engine Oil cooler
Intercooler

I would get the oil cooler 1st, then radiator 2nd - for power the CSF intercooler is a great option and has been wind-tunnel tested with the rest of the cooling components to make sure it doesn't block airflow to the rest of the coolers (no other company has done this).

Here is some info on our coolers - http://csfrace.com/bmw-radiator-splash/
Here is a YouTube video on the 4 piece kit -

Let me know if you have any questions.
