Lithium Ion Battery from M3/4 to M2
Has anyone tried to retrofit the Lithium Ion battery from M3/4 into the M2 i saw in the M3/4 forum a weight comparison with the Lithium Ion battery almost 30 lb lighter than the normal acid one.
I assume the M2 comes with the same Acid battery the M3/4 had before the Lithium Ion was fitted so it weights almost 60 lb. |

Different part numbers according to Realoem.
F87 uses 80AH~92AH (61217555719), F82 60AH~69AH (61218047221). Probably in different sizes due to different capacity.

Bigger battery in the M2 because it comes with more electronics as standard equipment maybe?
Is it really worth the extra $$$ to lose 30 lbs on the rear tires which could cause a bit of traction loss? I mean, if you plan on wider rear tires then fine, but to me it's a lot of money for not a lot of output. You could ditch the trunk trim and carpet and probably lose almost 30 lbs as well

I am running a Liteblox battery, which makes a difference in weight at about 21 kgs to the 80 aH stock battery.
Works well in daily use, start/stop will not work as you need to disconnect IBS sensor |

Was thinking something like take lightweight parts from BMW CS/GTS etc models and fit them in the M2, for example from what i have seen people retrofit the CCB from the M3/4 to M2 for weight saving and heat advantages even though they are way too expensive and don't really offer significant more stopping power than the standard brakes. Was thinking similar logic but on a less expensive scale so a couple of $$$ more for more expensive genuine BMW battery and save 30 lb plus doesn't sound that bad. |

Wich model of Liteblox battery are you using for your M2, the LB19XX ? Any specific bracket to hold the battery? It's a shame if you have to disconnect the IBS. |

This can most certainly be done and a good easy way to lose 30-40lbs depending on what size you end up with, but I would go aftermarket. I would contact braille batteries and see if they have one that has the same specs as the factory one or even better, but much lighter. At least get more info from them to point you in the right direction as they build all kinds of batteries for motorsports and aircraft.

Using 19XX w/o any bracket. If IBS not disconnected battery will not get enough power to charge and will start "beeping" for low power sometimes, but still runs the car.

I would be nervous to add lithium to a charging system not designed for it. I have seen lithium ion charging go wrong when I did radio control airplanes. BMW is kinda crazy about their electrical systems and require batteries to be registered to ensure the system is charging the battery properly, that is required for the factory battery so going to something totally different would seem high risk.

I wouldn't take a F80 Lithium battery and retrofit it to a F82 since that battery doesn't have this feature. But a liteblox/voltphreaks, etc sure. |

Do you get a CEL because of the lack of IBS?

The car needs to know—coded—what type of battery is installed so that it is charged properly. Otherwise it can be over or under charged.

The battery can be coded to work, it's half the weight and has a much longer lifespan than a M2's standard battery.
However, the sticker price is $1,500+ and it can't be shipped directly to you with most major carriers, so no discount. Only freight shipping. I'll pass on this for now.. . |
