Missing...
  • Double-bubble CF roof
  • Power domed hood
  • M mirrors
  • M seats (identical seats as the M235i w/exception of blue stitching)
  • M leather (Dakota leather used)
All makes sense now why it's base is $51k.

Love the color on this thing. I actually really like the front and the diffuser. The rear bumber is a different story, but I commend them for trying something a bit different. Its one of those things that will either grow on you, or you will just hate it. The interior as well as the exhaust note is underwhelming. This is begging for an aftermarket exhaust.

Its definitely got some aggressiveness to it, but the lack of certain M characteristics, such as the (Dont hate) mirrors, dome, CF roof, seats, etc, its just not as special imo.

Would I buy one as my main M car? No, the F80 is for me. Would I want one as a second car to have some fun in? Absolutely!

Either way, I think people will enjoy this!

Not loving it. I think I am more a 1M fan. But if it is priced reasonably that will change my opinion

I'm surprised there is only a 100ish lb weight savings over the M3:

M3 Weight
Curb Weight - Automatic transmission3595 lbs
Curb Weight - Manual transmission3540 lbs
Weight distribution, front/rear – Manual transmission51.6 / 48.4 %
Weight distribution, front/rear – Automatic transmission52.2 / 47.8 %

I am sorry guys I really wanted to like this car but it looks terrible. Aside from the mirrors which I REALLY hope they fix, the fact that there is no CF roof is a huge disappointment. This is an M trademark at this point especially on the coupes (aside from the M6 GC). The lack of color options exterior and interior wise makes me feel they are "testing the waters" and did not have enough faith in this car.

There is a market for it but the market is for those who don't want to pay up for the M3/M4 just yet and I guess want more value. People who say this car is the next E46 M3 are out of their minds.

Just like the 1M they took parts from the current generation M3/4 and created a baby version. The worse part is, they are using the terrible N55 engine. The exhaust note does not sound much different from the current N55 if you ask me and I had a 335 for reference.

Whatever room for improvement will be minimal compared to N54 days which is why at least the 1M had some kind of engine going for it/its limited availability. Thumbs down from me. Maybe the CSL version will address most of these issues.

I think you are missing the point of the 1M and M2 - they are kept simple and "cost-saving" from certain perspectives on purpose. They give you over 90% of the performance of the M3/4, but not all the trinkets that are available. That's the point - they give you a taste of ///M, and if you want a fancier or more comfortable or more CF-blinged out car, there are options. Up the food chain and with a higher profit margin for BMW.

I wish those things were available too, but those aren't the features that make this car exciting. The fact that you're getting an M3 from the belt line down, in a smaller package, and for a cheaper price....well that's pretty awesome.

And congrats on going for the M3 - BMW will be happy to make one for you.

I think it looks great. Could care less about M mirrors. I am more interested in the curb weight, which does't seem to be much different than the m235i.

Overall the car looks much better than the 1M. Smoother fender integration gives it a modern, muscular look. And the car sounds fantastic! Nothing the M3/4 fanboys can say there.

You would think that the M4 would weigh significantly more considering how much bigger it looks, but the weight savings technology in that car results in something thats only marginally heavier. With that said, the M3/4 is certainly a more special car.

If this car had all of the things we all wish it had like S55 engine, CF roof, M seats, and lets not leave out the M side mirror (rolling eyes), then the M2 would probably start at $60,000.

And lets be honest, if the M2 had all these things with a price point so close to the M4, the M4 sales would go in the garbage. A lot of people want a smaller car and are not happy with the size of the M4.

But what you said about the CSL addressing most of these issues is probably what will happen.

So much win. I've been wanting a car like this for a long time. If I cared about the little design details I would splurge for a M3. I just want a new small BMW M without spending a ton of money on creature comforts. This is it.

I will take mine in white with a bunch of spare tires for the track. Time to go driving...in the spring

Nope. You don't consider the more likely reason is that it's a typo?

The manual IS lighter than the DCT. It's a typo.

Go read the official press release.

I mean hopefully for the CSL model but even then it is more engine and wheels/suspension.

That "cost saving" aspect of it is what makes it look and feel so cheap to me. I mean, look at those seats....in comparison to the other M lines you can CLEARLY see where they cut corners.

I get it, the whole weight saving aspect along with a price difference but just on a personal level I am not seeing the big deal here. It is nothing that makes me excited and jump for it like M cars normally do. Hell, even the 1M had me going a bit crazy at the time because of the rarity aspect of it. But this M2 is going to be everywhere at that price point and oversaturated.

What would be noticeable about pistons and top rings? Nothing. Not needed. N55's are already durable engines, not sure why they wanted to do this. Probably to appease the people who would raise hell if the engine wasn't modified further than a tune.

Suspension changes, DCT, chassis etc are all to be expected. They're the norm for ///M models.

The N55 sounds good, yeah. But the S55 sounds like it should. All prior M engines have had the raspy voice. It's heritage.

I wanted to like this car.. I did. But I don't as much as I was hoping. Most of this thread is hype IMO.
