Unplugging Active Sound Design module turns off speakers entirely
First, to those that don't know what I'm talking about see this thread swagon lead me to: read the first page there are pictures at the bottom
http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1082175 I followed those directions and it turned off ASD, but it turned off all sound, I mean everything turned off. Radio, voice feedback, the whole thing. Once I took things apart again the second I plugged the ASD module back in the music started blaring. Can someone else try this and see if you can duplicate the results? Maybe I need to add a step? It may be you have to code the ASD off to get rid of it. I really don't like it. Here is what our cars amp area looks like: the top portion is rear left fender, the left is the rear taillight. The ASD module "should" be the small silver amp on the left which is what I unplugged. |

Hmm. That might be because the 1 Series Harman Kardon system does not have an amp while the bigger models do. Unplugging the ASD module disables other systems in the vehicle, then.
There's an ASD bypass thingy from some company, whose name I have forgotten, but probably the simplest way to get rid of it is to code it. Ugh, I am glad I don't have to deal with this.

just a reminder, be sure to code this out After the 1200mi service. if you code it before, it will be reset and lost at this service.

Thanks guys, as soon as 1200 mile service is done I'll get it coded off. For some reason the ASD includes (sport, sport+) an exhaust drone noise at 3000 rpm amoung other weirdness. The car is much quieter with it removed but is far more pleasing to hear at the same time..

I've disabled the valves on the 135i and since then it's properly loud inside the car between 2 ? 3k rpm.

There is also this from TechnicPnP.
AFAIK, there is no difference between the M2 sound systems and those of any other 2 Series, so it should work. An added benefit to coding is that this harness apparently eliminates much of the system 'noise' caused by the ASD module, which is technically a power amp in design. That one benefit makes the stereo system sound significantly better. with no other mods. Edit: This thread discusses that benefit. It's quite eye opening in terms of how BMW implements ASD in the 2 Series. Pretty punitive.

rather than physically disconnecting something you should code it out. lots of other options as well. google bmw coding and youll see. crazy amounts of customizations are available

I installed it as well a couple days ago. It is not completely plug and play you have to trim down two small areas on the connector since the grooves do not completely match up.

I didn't have this experience at all. My harness went in with absolutely no modifications.

Uhhh....there is a very good reason to physically bypass: the ASD module has a PA in it and that leads to audio distortion even if it's not pumping out crap. Best just to cut it out of the audio chain. I'm not saying the result is pristine audio, but at least you're one step closer. It's a $65, 45-minute job. Best mod I've ever done to a car.
