Probably best to ask in that 2'er thread...they've got a lot more experience with the harness I think.
I posted the question on 2ADDICTS, I'll follow up with any new info.

So perhaps I'm still missing something, but TechnicPnP previously said that the ASD unit functioned as a 15W amp (approx 8V), boosting the low 2.8V input signal from the iDrive, and that removing this 15W boost from the signal path was the reason for the missing bass.

So are we now saying that the rewired bypass harness somehow retains the boost of the ASD amp without sending the ASD engine sound into the signal path? I'm hopeful, but just want to know what I'm getting into before I order the new harness.

Not sure about the 15W boost, probably not even noticeable, but the biggie is the out of phase wires, that just kills the sound entirely.

They've now found the identified the fix, which you can either re-wire yourself, or send the harness back to Technic to be corrected free of charge. Looks like folks have had their bass back once this is done.

Here is the post in question, as well as the original thread:

Deepest thanks to the good folks who figured this out!!!

I just made the suggested "fix" to my harness. Can't test it yet as my M2 is still on a ship, currently docked in Panama.

Note that it is possible to make the alteration without cutting/splicing wires. Refer to the later replies (starting with Reply #93) in this thread: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1202389

Instead of using a jeweler's screwdriver to release the retainer clips for the contact pins, I used a paper clip (as recommended by another contributor to that thread). You just slide the end of the paper clip into the little hole next to the pin, apply lateral pressure, and the tiny spring clip should release, allowing you to pull the wire free. If it doesn't work, then try inserting the paper clip into the little hole on the opposite side of the pin (there are holes on both sides).

Note that the pins are not necessarily inserted into the connector in the same orientation, so you may need to "probe" the inward hole (i.e., the one toward the center of the connector) for one wire, and the outward hole (i.e., the one toward the edge of the connector) for the other, which was the case for me.

Before re-inserting the wires, reversing their positions, of course, I used a tiny screw driver to bend out the little spring clip on each connector - they'd flattened out a little during the extraction procedure. Good luck! -scr

Question.... Do we need to do this for every single harness or did they start to sell/supply the harness correctly in the last few weeks?

I do not really hear any issues with the bass at my end, so I am wondering if my harness wiring is OK. I do not really feel the need to open the trunk compartment again to do the change if all is already correct.

Edit: After some research I feel I need to do it as well... Uhmm task for the upcoming weeks.

Not sure since when they fixed it, but I sent them a message to make sure its been corrected before I order. I always looked into it but was not willing to live with the tradeoff.

My message:

Hello, I had been on the fence about ordering the ASD bypass module since I read you had to live with the tradeoff of losing some bass. I recently read some threads online stating that this was really due to a faulty wire diagram from BMW which caused this product to be wired incorrectly. I also read that you guys are aware and have corrected this issue on this product and you will no longer experience the loss of bass. Can you confirm this before I order?

Their response:

Fixed confirmed -notice that website link for ASD Bypass harness is no longer showing a warning about bass loss. 👍

Elías

I will be ordering one now!

Thanks everyone here for the info!

I contacted them this morning and Elias offered to send me a free extractor. He also sent me this diagram. I declined his offer and simply swapped the pins myself. The whole job took less than 30 minutes.

I gotta say this guy stands by his product and was extremely responsive. Highly recommended.

Just following up as promised ... better late rather than never! Seems the harness issues are sorted out, but here's what I learned from 2ADDICTS on the missing bass issue (reduced signal strength vs out-of-phase front speaker):

Once the news broke of the harness mod that fixes the bass response I did the mod and reinstalled the harness. The bass response is fixed. So, I assume the 15W AMP loss from the missing ASD module isn't as significant as the out-of-phase issue with the harness wiring. I'd say order a harness and enjoy.

I think it's a combination of both. The out-of-phase condition that the original wiring in the harness created in the subs had a far larger effect than any lost line-level input voltage that taking ASD out of the signal path creates. And honestly, that amount of power (15W) is nowhere near enough to make a tremendous difference in bass frequency SPL. It would be manifested far more in the higher audible registers than in bass.
I too contacted TechnicPnP and asked whether or not all new orders are being filled with updated harnesses and received the following response from Elias:

"ASD Bypass harness is completely fixed of schematic problems. Full bass restored. 👍"

Coded Off the ASD on my car

Just got back from Breda where I got my car coded. On my way home I made a short video. The car sounds so much better now without ASD (coded out)!!!

Second clip.

Also did a few other things that I will show in a more thorough (and better filmed) video:

• Fold in exterior mirrors without delay
• Remove seat belt reminder
• Start/stop memory
• Enable rear lights during daytime driving lights
• DVD in motion (apparently now BMW did something to prevent this and we only managed to have it working up to 32kms/h)
• DIVX/XVID codec support
• Play video files through USB stick
• Code welcome light to stay on 60 seconds instead of 20 seconds
• Remove door window lock when opening door
• Add turning signal in exterior mirror to welcome light
• Enable exterior lights under the door handle to turn on when putting car in reverse gear
• Disable Active Sound Design

Did you notice any negative impact to the sound quality when coding out ASD?

For a while I thought folks couldn't figure out how to actually code it out. Is it well documented now for folks that want to code their own car?

If I did, it was not enough for me to notice it yet. Bare in mind I am not an audiophile and usually drive around without music playing or I just listen to radio on very low volume.

I reckon it is well documented yes, it is basically just one more code.

"Start/stop memory" means that the start&stop state (on/off) remains the same when you turn your car off and then start it again.
