Really, BMW does not know to make anything except engine.

I saw a Performance Steering Wheel here, it is half leather, half alcantara. My god, for that kind of car you have to have uniform steering wheel, not any kind of combination, because you react different with leather than alcantara or any other material. Combination can be in my Enclave, and still is not so good.

Almost all is fashion in BMW now, without any logic. It seems buyers want it. It seems BMW is not for me. Or to buy new one M3 and replace steering wheel with some used, old one. I do not have a word to explain this.

I don't seem to understand what you're saying sorry, but welcome here. You have -5 rep points? How 's that? So I gave you one point lol. Dunno what's going on here but anyway. I wanted the alcantara wheel incl the carbon middlesection(2 separate parts) that's almost €1000,- at my $tealer....

Cheers

Specifically the Diameter of the wheel, and the thickness.
I'm coming from an E36, and I never thought about the size of my steering wheel, that is until we picked up my wife's E82 135i with the M sport steering wheel. Wow is that wheel perfect, its diameter is so small, and the thickness of the wheel just fits my hands perfectly. After feeling that wheel, my E36 felt like i was driving a bus.
So...
The M2 seems to share the steering wheel with the M4 minus a few buttons. I've looked around but haven't been able to find a measurement of the M4's diameter. I'm really curious as to how it compares to the 1-series M-sport wheel.
>>>I don't know<<<
Something else: Does the heated steering wheel option change the wheel, or the size of the wheel?
>>>No change of size + heated steering wheel function is ineffective with MP steering wheel (no internal heat wiring); airbag and Lane Departure Warning remain fully operational<<<
Additionally: What about the sizes of these M Performance steering wheels? I'm not immediately interested in the one with screens and lights and such, but there are a few options. are they all the same size as the normal M2/4 wheel? or are they all smaller by the same or different amounts?
>>>Stock M2 steering wheel and MP steering wheel are virtually the same size - all internals are transferred from the stock steering wheel to the MP steering wheel (airbag, electronics and blocks with buttons); however, apart from being two-tone (leather/alcantara), the MP steering wheel is chunkier/meatier (especially the alcantara part right above the thumbrests) + has a flatter shaped bottom part (stock steering wheel has a more circular shape)
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=03_4058<<<

Anyone have some insight on this info? I've been thinking about this and looking for info, haven't come across any numbers, but boy that steering wheel is starting to look huge in the pictures to me. cant tell if i'm just imagining it now ...
>>>It's all a matter of taste and getting used to it<<<

Alcantara wheels are designed to be used with driving gloves. They provide more grip than a leather wheel for the track.

The only con is you look like a bit of a tool when putting on driving gloves to go to the grocery store.

I had an alcantara covered steering wheel in a previous car, but this is soooo much better. For those in cold climates its worth giving up the heating function.

The alcantara part above the thumbrests is indeed particularly chunky compared to the stock steering wheel. Significant difference, size-wise.

Heated steering function becomes ineffective (no wiring inside the MP Pro steering wheel). Airbag and 'Lane Departure Warning' still function (airbag + LDW vibration engine are transferred).

For a couple of pictures of mine: here

Just a word of caution, price-wise: the MP Pro steering wheel ain't a bargain if you know that it's supplied 'naked' (bareback metal frame with leather/alcantara fabric all around): the middle/inner part of the steering wheel is just bare metal: zero electronics, no buttons, no airbag, no airbag cover with BMW logo, no vertical inlay cover, no plastic frame. Nada. You got to transfer all that jazz from your stock M2 steering wheel to the MP Pro steering wheel. And the MP open-pore CF inlay cover is not included either - it's sold separately.

MP Pro steering wheel:

Here is how my stock M2 steering wheel looks after being 'stripped'. The MP Pro steering wheel is supplied this way. So don't think that the price is a bit steep because you think of getting a full-blown plug-and-play steering wheel - you don't. So, actually, it's pretty "CSL": Coupé (bottom part is cut/flat) - Sport (leather/alcantara + blue 12h marker + chunky) + Leichtbau/lightweight (stripped of all peripherals).

Stock M2 steering wheel:

I'm surprised people want the m performance one or to change the wheel at all. I think it's the best wheel BMW has ever made. I'm not a fan of flat bottoms. The small airbag is my favorite post 1990 steering wheel period.

But it's all a matter of taste.

Yes

From another post:

part # 32 30 2 413 015 = steering wheel with race display (leather + LEDs)
part # 32 30 2 413 014 = steering wheel without race display (leather/alcantara + blue 12h marker)
part # 32 30 2 413 480 = CF cover - steering wheel

When you are driving in the correct manner, your hands never leave the alcantara part of the wheel. Take a racing course or watch a professional race car driver... they rarely slide their hands off of the 3 and 9 position. Lots of performance wheels are designed this way. The alcantara is placed where the grip matters and is useful when wearing racing gloves as it gives great grip.

I've never had alacantara. Does it have a spongy feel or is it still firm? Some say it can act like a sponge if you are not wearing gloves ie your Palms get sweaty.

I play a lot of hockey and despite showering etc that hockey glove smell can linger on your hands for a bit-wouldn't want that transferring.

Firm with very low pile alcantara.

Definitely more maintenance than regular leather but not that big of a deal.

Open-pore CF for the M2.

But should be possible to get the classic CF (wet look) from the M3/M4 (see pictures below). But that would conflict with the open-pore CF in the M2 interior.

I have been really bad about doing anything to the steering wheel in the X5 and it looks fine after six years.
