Are equal length exhaust systems the best option?
I wanted to start an open and objective discussion with anyone interested in the science of exhaust tuning without devolving into brand loyalty turf war or a poll of how much you love and endorse your X-Brand, X-Model exhaust.
First things first, I know jack shit but I'm an avid learner. Anything I propose is probably either just speculative or based on someone else's work. Are equal length exhaust systems the best option? If the goal is to time the exhaust pulses to exit at a frequency that most people would find appealing, aren't there more than one way to tune an exhaust to achieve that? I think there are multiple dimensions that can be tuned to achieve the same result; Pipe length just happens to be the easiest for most people to understand. Wouldn't systems that leverage tuning in multiple dimensions be better? Couldn't exhaust temperature and or pipe diameter tuning be used as an alternative, or in addition to pipe length tuning methods to achieve the same objectives while avoiding the additional complexity, cost to manufacture and other compromises of a pure EL system? Has anyone compared the effect of using any of the EL systems to see whether, and to what extent performance might be sacrificed for the sake of sound tuning? I wish there was a perfect solution, but EL seems to be one of the best so far. If you have the money to experiment, it would benefit all!
Also, Did you review this thread on the F80 forums? Quite a few different methods were tried Equal-length exhaust discussion: new S55 sounds https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1675268 People have made comments that their AA equal length doesnt sound as good until its heated up. Im still waiting on my Valvetronic Design EL to ship ( been over 5 months)….. Hope it has an improved tone over my Remus race( which is already way better than stock)

Will it be perfection? Will it be junk? Supposedly most has been done since March! ( even though i was told February) but they just cant get a 3 1/2" piece in to finish it…. Specific bends are outsourced i guess? Anyways I didnt go with AA again because I had a similar experience with them, but ive been waiting so long already for the Valvetronic…. What other options are out there?

The equal length midpipe is the best sounding midpipe in my opinion
just make sure to get the correct setup.

I went full EL/AA rear via XPH.
There is a loud reverb drone between say 1500-2000rpm when the system is cold that goes away pretty fast. I usually leave the valves closed while leaving my neighborhood anyways so I never hear it. Everything outside that range sounds amazing even cold, so it's barely a gripe for me. Once warmed, it sounds incredible. Super glad I went EL. I hear many M3/M4 in my area, and so many sound suuuper raspy while being crazy loud. Makes me love mine even more. |

A lot of it is personal preference. I heard the EL full AA set up and decided to go single mid pipe (as my previous F80 had), so I'm running single AA mid with Remus race. I am also running BM3. It is livable with burbles toned down

I'm also running AA single mid with Remus race, with BM3 burble settings to the ones I like after some fine tuning, I'm pretty happy with the ressults
