Which would you choose...and why?
I woke up this morning to a call from my local BMW dealer to find out that I have been awarded an allocation for the upcoming M2 CS after having placed a deposit and put my name on one of the (in)famous "lists" that dealers have for these low allocation vehicles more than a year ago. Great news, right? Except that since I have been waiting for over a year for this phone call, I got bored. Don't you hate that? So one day, I stopped into my local P Dealer and got to chatting. Was told that although unlikely, I could put my name on their "list" for a new 718 GT4 allocation. Two months ago, I got the call to come in and fill in my order sheet. So now I find myself in the unlikely position (or so I was led to believe by both dealers) of having an allocation for BOTH cars. It is not lost on me that the cars are quite a ways apart on price with the Porsche costing almost 50% more than the BMW, but I would look at value for $ rather than the actual cost as a deciding factor.
What to do? Interested in hearing some thoughts for you guys/gals. I would prefer to read opinions that have a strong base of facts to support as I am a logical thinker and try to keep the emotional quotient to a minimum, but there is a place for passion when it comes to cars, so this can be helpful as well. I have added a poll as well for those who just want to give quick feedback. Some add'l info: 6MT CS would cost about CAD $99K as spec'd. 6MT GT4 would cost CAD $140K as spec'd (those folks at Porsche really like to nickel and dime a guy!). I currently own a heavily modified 6MT 2018 M2 (N55) and have been able to drive a DCT M2C (S55) (back to back on track) I have never owned (or driven for that matter) a Porsche This will NOT be a DD. I only drive the car on week-ends in non-winter months (Apr to Oct) with rarely a passenger and no kids so no need of a rear seat. The car is for ME. I go to the track 1-2 times per year if my schedule permits |

When you look at the literature on "subjective well-being" (happiness research), invariably it is shown that the more varied your experiences, the more memorable they are, and the greater utility (happiness) you will get out of them. So, if you have the option of going to your usual vacation destination of Fort Lauderdale, where every year you comfortably spend the time doing bird watching and eating every yummy meal at Tad's Steaks, OR going to Costa Rica and doing uncomfortable stuff like sky diving and zip lining and snorkeling and eating from road side carts that are 50% likely to be the most delicious food you've ever eaten or give you dysentery, happiness research says you are better served going with the latter. You already have an M2. Therefore moving up to a CS will only be marginally different. It's sort of like going to Fort Lauderdale and being wild and crazy because this time you go to Pete's Steaks instead of Tad's Steaks. The GT4 is entirely different. It's going to Costa Rica. If you already had a Cayman, the advice would be to go with the M2CS |

I would get the M2CS. 80 more horsepower will make the car handle completely different than your M2. Plus the car is going to be quite rare. I see porches every day but almost never see an M2.

My initial instinct is to go with GT4. I think the CS will bring a different feel to your current list, but I think the GT4 will bring a new experience. I love the look of the GT4. Are you keeping current M2?
Any young kids in life that you want to include in this passion? If yes, go with CS as leaving them out will nag at you at some point. I don't see the point of a "weekend" car as I drive less on the weekend. Id get whatever I would drive all the time. I expect to get a CS allocation and still plan to purchase. Edit:. I'm also assuming you can comfortably afford the GT4. Not worth it if you have to remove other enjoyments from life. Last edited by medphysdave; 01-04-2020 at 03:10 PM.. |

I would opt for a 2015-2106 GT4 to bring it closer closer to price of M2C. Thjere are plenty of them out there that apparently only sit in peoples garages for an occasional Sunday drive.

No. I wouldn’t keep the M2 as I have a DD as well. Only need one “toy”. If the CS was ultimately chosen, I would have many parts I could transfer over to the CS from the OG M2, but also many I would need to part out. I looked into these, but to be honest, the prices have actually increased from original MSRP and are in the range of CAD $125K for a “lightly used” 2016 981 GT4. As such, CAD $140K for a new one seems reasonable. |

Both are out of my price range but if you can afford it go for the GT4. There wouldn't be enough difference between the CS and your current M2.

You have never driven a Porsche, and nobody has ever driven an M2CS . . . and you have narrowed your next purchase down to a GT4 versus M2CS?
You are taking a poll on Beemer forum as to which others would purchase, the overwhelming majority of which I am quite certain have never driven a GT4 - and probably none have ever driven a 718 GT4 - and, again, none have ever driven the M2CS. Am I missing something? ///AVM |

Dan is right. The CS will be extremely rare with only a few hundred coming to your country per another post. The GT4 will be made in additional years and is not limited. Plus there may be a GT4 RS that will be more powerful than GT4. The CS should be a different experience than 2018 M2 with 80 more horsepower and adaptive suspension handling. The GT4 won't be as powerful as the CS or your modded M2.

I believe that most are suggesting the GT4 because it's a change of pace and not so much that it is superior. The current GT4 is not the one I'd be after as I keep seeing hints of the GT4 with the 4.0.
I like quick acceleration, but question how necessary 0-60 times below 5s are for a driver's car. I've launched my car full tilt twice. I never find myself, in the real world, needing to accelerate as quickly as is possible (3.5s). I agree with the person that mentioned there will always be more possibilities to jump in a GT4, and not so much with the CS. A solid game plan would be to pick up the CS, drive it for a couple of years, and then jump into a used 718 GT4 for a discount. With GT4 production being less constrained the prices might fall a little more for this version. |

That would be me that mentioned there will be additional opportunities for the GT4. I believe they will be making the GT4 until the end of the current Cayman generation which is 2023. Then in 2023, the Cayman may go all electric. So three years to buy GT4. I believe the more powerful GT4 RS is coming in 2021 according to Rennlist.
Whereas the CS is 2020 production only. Dave is right, get the CS and drive it for 2 years or so to experience it, then you can get a Porsche. |

I have zero idea how anyone is looking to purchase a vehicle in the $100K bracket and driven neither? It truly sounds like the only thing that is important to you is the opinion of others. Really poor decision making process. You can throw it back into my lap as being curt, but I am not sure how else to respond to the circumstance you present? I extensively tested the 981 CGTS, 981 GT4, 718 CGTS, M2C and M4. One brand stood out as superior, and one model within that brand stood out as best serving my personal interests . . . and I now own it. By no means is this meant to suggest the M2C and M4 are not great in their own rights. . . in fact, I am about to pull trigger on ownership of one of them as well. Vastly different cars intended for different purpose. I have absolutely no interest in even considering the M2CS over any of the above models. The best version of the M2CS has already been released. . . when BMW released the M2C. ///AVM |

Man oh man... what is it with all the angry posting? Seems there's been an uptick during the holidays. Maybe too much time with family has frayed some folks' nerves?
I thought it was potentially alcohol during the holiday season... but it's well past Christmas and New Year's. So, I suppose, at this point it's just called alcoholism. |

Good position to be in and early congrats on getting something special in the coming months!
Your background is very helpful and since this will be a weekend toy and since you already have a M2CS, the obvious choice is the GT4... I say this for a variety of reasons, you have already modded your M2 to a similar performance to the CS. There is very little to gain from a weekend toy when you already have something similar in the stable. The only reason you would chose the CS is if you were to buy it based on rarity or "investment". The GT4 will give you a completely different driving experience on the weekends, with its low seating position and outright sports car feel. The CS is after all, based on a regular production car, which will be compromised in some aspects. However, that is not a bad thing because that market for a sports car with available backseat is a plus for some people who may not use it primarily as a weekend toy. Oh and last option is to get the M2CS first, if it does indeed come much earlier than the Porsche. From what I have read, you may not get a GT4 allocation until possibly end of 2020? Then you have to factor in build and transport time. If the CS is being built in March, you will receive it in May / June and have many months to enjoy it. Due to the CS scarcity, I'm sure you can flip for at least what you bought it for.
