That is good news for those of us who got in before the change. I don't plan to do any software updates until out of warranty. Will do the proper hub fix at the same time. Figure for ~$5k I can get reliable 550 whp. Should be a blast.

No. This is a hardware level thing which is discussed in this thread. You could have an ECU that does not require bench unlocking, take it to a dealer, they update the ECU and now if you want to tune you'd have to bench unlock. But that is a different matter. This is hardware-level locking. You either have the newer boot-loader 'enabled' ECU or you don't. If you don't, you're a lucky man.

My car is still on July 2018 DME version, never updated and still OBD flashable (and flashed many times since then)

I'm a lucky owner though

this thread is about a new hardware ECU. so as it relates to this thread, no you can not be updated and locked.

however if you are on the old hardware, you can be updated via software by the dealership. there are solutions for this though. such as preventing the update by telling the dealership to not fucking touch your car... or bench unlocking it after they update it.

Just checked my build date, 8/20, arrrg! Hopefully the 7/20 build date cutoff is wrong or a piggyback will work.

Piggybacks will work regardless of DME model. In contrast, flash tunes are limited by encryption.

Great news! As for me, I always wait until the warranty is out before making any software updates. Maybe, I'll change my attitude now. Anyway, I think it's better to browse many sources of information where you can find some useful tips. I try to do it when I've any difficult issue. Sometimes, they publish valuable information. My favorite site is https://news.kisspr.com because of the cognitive approach they promote. For example, I've found material about how a woman sold her idea for one billion dollars. I'm sure you'd be able to find some piece of advice related to the issue described in this topic.

I heard in the grapevine that the ECU blockade has been hacked, but I can't share anything more right now.

Hopefully over the next few months we will see the first unlocked ECUs. Of course, I want to see it first before I believe it, but it is good news people are working on it and seem to have a positive outcome.

Stay tuned for more...

Chris Harris / Ian Litchfield podcast from last week (or maybe two weeks ago) had a few seconds of Bosch ECU coverage, and Ian appeared to indicate it was just a matter of not too long before something was available... as if he knew something.

It would be even nicer if they found a way to achieve direct OBD tuning (no bench unlock) but maybe I am asking too much?

This should work. It's a "Collecting Cars" podcast with Ian:
