Newer model M2C DME unlock ETA?

Hi guys,

Haven't seen any ETA on newer model M2C DME unlock. Anybody have an idea when the DMEs will be cracked and OBD flash + unlock will become the norm?

If anyone knew when they'd crack the new bootloader I'm sure that we'd hear about it right away.

ProTuning Freaks claim they are working on it but no ETA. I think lots of people have been waiting for a solution for about 6 months now. My feeling is that eventually someone will crack it but who knows how long it’s going to take...

One thing I've wondered, and I'm sure it's been answered, but I don't get that involved on the tuning side of things.

Is the DME software on our 2020 M2C models the same as what's on all other BMW performance DMEs? Meaning does the latest M5, new X3M, M8 etc all have this same code that needs to be cracked?

If all newer BMW models are in same boat then someone will get it figured out. If it's just 2020 M2C then more likely our cars won't ever have the ability to OBD download without a bench fix.

Just a little confused why the new S58 had tuning support immediately but the S55 in newer version M2C's hasn't gotten it yet in the 6 months they've been out. Hoping PTF gets it done asap!!!

I am an F80 guy but have a buddy who just picked up an M2C as his first performance car and has been relying on me for modding advice. He has 300 miles on it and already put downpipes and turbos on it. Without tuning it, he still has no idea what the investment in hardware he made is capable of!

They can be tuned but not through the OBD port.

BMW has re-encrypted the DME for all cars with the S55 engine after March 2019. So yes, this affects M2/3/4.
You can still flash the ECU by connecting directly to it via harness, just cannot access it via OBDII.

Little correction, there are tools that allow OBDII flashing, however such tools come with a price, I have heard 16k$ for the interface tool, Bosch I believe (see the Noelle topic)

None of the tuners actually develop the software themselves. The reality is it will probably never be cracked as there is very little incentive for anyone to work on it. There was a good Smoking Tire episode a few years ago where one of the CA tuners (I think it was VF Engineering) explained how it works. The software development to crack DME's is completely separate from the tuners.

This isn't the issue in question. What you're talking about is encrypted DME software that requires bench unlocking. As of June-July 2020 the bootloaders of the DME are also encrypted (by Bosch, who supply them). There is no method to unlock them yet, bench unlocking isn't an option either.

So... we sit and wait... or, buy a tuned ECU or piggy- back tune.

Just be patient. A solution will eventually be available- there is a lot of profit to be made since this affects many new models which have a huge demand for tuning including the new Supra's, F8x's, G8x's, etc.

You said in Dec you changed 4 modules and swapped the DME out for a pre locked M2C one and you had tuned your car.

https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=27024806

Why run a JB4 after doing all that? Did your car not run right?

Curious how this was tuned, considering the boot loader issue affects all DMEs past June/July-ish 2020?
