Wow is this still in print! I have some quarter century old editions of that magazine. Who buys magazines these days?

E39 on top, M2CS on bottom .. it's got me covered. Will miss my E39 540i 6MT when I sell it in the Spring. Just an all-around fantastic car, with plenty of bottom-end torque and really comes alive at speeds one shouldn't be driving on US roads ;-)

It's a nice article. One of the few that actually even says "And it's worth every penny."

That was quite the glowing review! Also thought it was interesting the level of confidence in the investment side, the need to write a letter to get an allocation, and the sell out in UK which didn't seem to match up to forum discussions previously.

My confusion lies within the praise of the 6 speed feeling different in this car vs previous generations. I was told that it's the same trans and shifting linkage. A complete carryover from the M2C. Yet I've read some personal reviews and article reviews that suggest if feels different. I hardly think it is a placebo when reviewers have spent sufficient time with both.

What could change? Would a part number remain the same if said part's construction material was modified? Thinking of the shifter bushings. I didn't think that there was a shift gate beneath the shift boot, but if yes, then could it be machined to a tighter tolerance?

This is all I have while waiting

Maybe the mounts are stiffer? Part numbers don't always change even when they change the part, it can supersede the previous design.
