I had to get a new rear tire with 90% of tread left.

Worst yet I had to wait a week for Discount Tire to get a replacement tire.

I picked up a screw in one of my rears in my 135i factory runflat with just a thousand miles on it. Had the screw pulled and plugged, and never had a problem with it after.. Sold the car 7 years later with the tire still fully functional..

It all depends on where the screw or nail is. If it is anywhere near the sidewall, most tire shops will not repair the tire. Sounds like op and I were unlucky and got the nail in the wrong spot.

I'm pretty sure they're only rated to be safe for like 5. I wouldn't keep a tire longer than that. Saving a few bucks isn't worth risking lives.

Relax.. Half that time they were off the car having used winter rubber and wheels. Car was very low mileage. Besides, its off topic. This is supposed to be about screws and nails!

The point he's making is that it's the age, not the miles that matter. Rubber ages whether it's on the car or off the car. Personally, I'd replace any tire that is more than six years old regardless of the amount of tread remaining.

That's about the max.

He's absolutely correct, the rubber hardens and the tire no long performs as intended.

If I am not mistaken, the DWS3s are no longer in production. They found one at a store in California and had it sent to them. Wish the tread was more worn so I could get PS4s.

I so want a set of Pilot Cup 2's...

I absolutely love Michelin tires.

THey were on the cusp when I sold the car. He'll replace them if he wants. According to Edmunds:

"Tire manufacturers such as Continental and Michelin say a tire can last up to 10 years provided you get annual tire inspections after the fifth year."

They’re great as long as you don’t drive in the rain

I have zero problems with them in the rain and I drive in MDM most of time.

But to be honest when I know it's going to be raining I take my other car.

Both passenger tires on my M have been plugged because of screws. Rear was plugged this morning actually.

That's one of contributing factors which caused the vehicle Paul Walker was in to lost control; dry-rotted tires. So you're right.

But at the same time, the shelf-life of a properly stored tire can exceed 5 years but I wouldn't pass 10 or more.

Agreed.

Reference to Paul Walker's tragic accident and his 13(?) year old tires on the CGT
