Rear Tires for 18" Wheels

I have a set of 513Ms on my M2. Looking to replace the rear tires and upgrading to PS4s. Sadly they don't make them in the factory M3 size 275/40R18s but they do have them in 275/35R18 & 285/35R18.

Apex wheels recommends 275/35R18 but comparing that to the stock 265/35R19s the difference is 2.83%

285/35R18s are closer at 1.74%

Will 285/35s fit without rubbing, factory suspension setup?

Yeh they'll work just fine, especially at stock height.

have you thought about just sticking with stock tire width?
i went with m513 in 245/40r18 and 265/40r18 and it's just perfect, get a stickier tyre and you will have plenty of grip! no need for 285 in my opinion
(also tires are more cheap)

295/35/18 have the correct rolling radius

I think 295s on a 10" wheel is overkill.

295/35 on 10" is fine. With some competition tires it is still in the recommended fitment from manufacturer. Although, the lowest possible rim size. 10"-11.5"

@Dave I have exactly the same dilemma, recently purchased Ohlins and next Wednesday its install time and I want to change the tires as well. 513m here with orig 275 255/40 PSS.

Now i would like to go stickier compound and not much in that exact space anymore.

Yokohama makes them A052 wry pricey and real size is close to 15mm larger than marked. And super expensive here 400usd a tire.

Goodyear f1 Supersports make them, but not much improvement from PSS i guess

Then we have cup2 would have to drop from 40 to 35....

Please more experienced track rats who have 513m chime in with your tire recommendations.

Much appreciated

Hankook RS4 comes in 265/285 35/r18. They also happen to be on sale on Tire Rack right now. I’ve been running 265 square for the last year and wear/durability on track is great. Switching to the 265/285 staggered this year when the current set wears out. Not the fastest tires, but I’m sticking with them for consumables cost.

One downside to this tire is they really don’t deal with standing water of any depth, so rain to/from the track will be a bit of a white knuckle experience. I’m happy with their wet traction when there isn’t standing water though.

Pulled a trigger after many back and forth sessions on the Pirelli Trofeo R. 265/40 and 245/40.

Interesting thing is real sizes are: 282mm rear and 255mm front respective.

Didn’t notice your location. It’s surprising to me how regionalized tires seem to be aside from a few tier 1 models in each category.

I just ordered the RS4s in the 265/285 as well for the 9.5/10.5 apex FL-5s. Price is pretty crazy right now even if I won't be hitting the track anytime soon, hard to pass up.

I personally wasn't a fan of the square setup even on r888r's. Currently on the 255/285 RE71 on 19s, great tire but the 19" tire options are pretty limited.

Yep, RS4s are a fantastic deal right now. I was considering spending a bit more this spring to try A052s, but when I saw the RS4 pricing, it was an easy choice to stick with what I know.

On the staggered vs square situation, I liked square on stock suspension with camber plates, and the ability to rotate tires for even wear, and a very balanced feel mid-corner. However, I felt like I was giving up a bit from apex to track out as far as how much power I could apply, and never felt comfortable through an uphill ‘S’ where on staggered tires I could just keep the pedal to the floor vs actively managing throttle on square tires to keep the chassis balanced. I learned a lot from driving the square setup, and driving to the limits of rear axle traction was fun, but the car felt just a bit on edge for my taste.

I switched to coilovers, front monoballs, and rear toe links, plus went a bit more aggressive on my alignment and now everything happens a bit faster when I lose traction, and started to get a bit more exciting than I’d prefer. Also, tire wear is so even now, I don’t see much need for frequent rotation. Flipping the tires midway through their life should be good enough to get full life from them.

So given all that, I think I’ll be a bit more comfortable on staggered. I’ll just have to work on slow in-fast out. I have a tendency to over-drive the front tires. More skill building.

Here you go, with some data fresh from install:
Lowered about 20mm on Ohlins R&T
Front camber 2.5
Rear camber 2.0
Corner weighted 50% cross balance
Had to use 15mm spacers front to make it flush again
No rubbing anywhere even with compression

awesome, that looks like a proper tire! everything bigger would have been too much in my opinion, great choice!

Here's mine:

Hankook RS4:
245/40
265/40

On Volk Racing TE37 SAGA, official 18" M2 spec:
18x9 +23
18x10 +34

I think Rays's official M2 spec is a spacer-free one. Do I deep down wish they were a 9.5/10.5 spec that can better fit 265/285 or beyond? A little bit. But I love the thicc 40 profile spec on these JDM wheels 😍

Very similar experience when I ran square. I only ran square on an autox course before switching back to staggered on the track. Square setup on coils and camber, but still invited a lot of oversteer and how much gas I can apply out of a turn. Understand the even tire wear and cost savings, but I only do a few events per year so like to drive with that staggered setup when I do.

And they delivered today! 265/285
