Sounds like a pulley bearing starting to go, or could be the belt itself.

when you rev it does it get louder and more pitchy?

I need to look at mine today, making a weird noise too but only can hear it when I rev the car over 3k, that said have not heard it with the hood open which I will do today.

I would see if car is throwing any codes too just to see but prob not.

During coldstart its loudest, also when I rev is getting louder and it’s something like ticking noise, when the temperature rises to 100 degrees, I feel that it stops completely and everything is fine… it’s strange

yeah mine sounds just like that when its cold but then when warms up and I rev it it gets even more pitchier, maybe its in even worst shape. I just took a video.

It seems like its coming from the alternator so I will probably replace that pulley first.

This is what mine sounds like, similar I feel like

I will probably be doing it over the xmas break. Its not my only car and its more of a track car for me so will probably either pick a good weekend or just winter break. I do have a winter car control clinic in January so want to get it done by then, while I am there I might replace the belt and a few other pulleys. Don't want to assume its that one and do all the work and then its another one, since have to remove belt anyways.

However if you are into doing it I have compiled a bunch of videos and instructions from the forum.

This video shows how to remove the belt (without removing the fan, seems to be doable but definitely tight in there)

Then this video is to replace the alternator tensioner

Also a LOT of great info here for idler pulleys and just general on how to do all this

https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1833401

Also a link there that shows how to remove fan if you want to go through the extra work, seems like a lot more work but then you have space to easily do the other stuff. Not sure what I will decide to do, maybe try without removing the fan but we will see.

Annoying that this is happening on pretty low mile cars but hey, not the end of the world.

i recently had to replace the idler and the crankshaft balancer on mine after ~30,000km....

idler was noisey/bouncy, and,
two of the retaining bolts for the balancer had snapped

combined it sounded quite a bit like engine knock on start.

Something like this can be a real useful tool to find where a noise is coming from - just be careful around the fast moving bits.

Hey guys, looks that i had the same noises as you in my M2C(of 2020). In my case the noises appears at the same kilometers as you, and i take it to the mechanic to fix it, they replace the belt and the tensor belt. After 20k kilometers, i had the same noises so i take the car back to the mechanic again (but another) they did the same (last time was in november 2022). Actually (in november 2023) the noises have appeared again, idfk what to do, so if you have other way to fix it let me know pls.

What did the mechanic replace? The belts? Or did they also replace the idler pulleys?

I had a similar issue that I just fixed (another thread on this page I just updated) my noise was similar to this but a bit quieter however when reving it would get as loud or louder than this. I tracked it down to a idler pulley, the bearings were a bit gritty maybe so although still spun fine it was making noise.

Its strange that your mech replaced a bunch of stuff and car was fine for 20k and now its back, this could be a different issue such as before it was the belt or 1 of the idler pulleys so he replaced that and now its a different idler pulley or the tensioner pulley. Not sure if he replaced everything while he was replacing the belt or if he just did the belts. Find out what exactly was replaced, if it was everything then I will be curious because 20km is not that much but it would not be impossible for a bearing to go bad in that time (very unlikely though).

I never updated here, took me a while to get to this lol, shows how little I use the car. But just got done replacing the idler pulley and seems like it was the problem (short ride and noise is gone). Did you get yours figured out?

What the mech replaced was the "belt kit", that should be the belt, tensioner belt and the idle (but im not sure). Im going to text the mechanic this week and lets see what he says. The last 2 replacement was on warranty, actually i lost it 2 month ago, so i expect not to open my wallet.

In my opinion (im not a mech) the issue could be caused by a pulley that after x kilometers do the belt tensioner or the idle fails.

I will be updating this, thank you.

Just seems strange that a pulley would fail again so quickly after only 20km so yeah let us know cuz like i said there are 2 idlers for example and he might have just replaced 1 and now the other is on the fritz.
