OG M2 iStep/Nav Update Review: Full Screen CarPlay and CS Software

Car is a stock 2017 M2 nearing the end of it's factory warranty. Started with BimmerCode and changing some basics. Having taken the car in for it's final dealer visit on warranty, I'm ready to play around a bit.

So the plan is to hit it with a CSF intercooler and BM3 to wake it up, which means a eNet cable is in order.

With that cable on hand and since I had just added CarPlay, the full screen update becomes a must have. I looked around here and after seeing a ton of positive reviews decided to hit up Kubax86. He immediately hit me back via PM with instructions and from there on was super easy to work with. His customer service was completely top notch. It felt like working with some private BMW concierge, but one that actually knew what they were talking about and doing. Crazy concept.

I downloaded eSys and a nav file, TeamViewer, and Kubax got to work. 45 minutes later, my nav was updated and CarPlay was running full screen. Like it should have come stock. No one wants some wack iDrive/CarPlay hybrid nonsense but this update completely fixes that. With the update, the iDrive system feels a little more responsive and CarPlay is way more usable. The Now Playing screen looks better with the larger album art, the map is viewable, and the CarPlay dashboard actually make sense now.

The next day, having sorted out CarPlay we reconnected and this time he got to work updating the iStep to the latest version. After about 15-20 minutes the iStep was updated, and he was on to applying the F87CS steering, rear dif, and DSC updates. Just like day one, Kubax86 was an absolute professional to work with. He even ensured that the previous coding I had done with BimmerCode wasn't impacted.
  • Steering Feel - Can't comment about Comfort or Sport, but in Sport+ the steering feel is remarkably lighter at low speeds. I'm not sure if it was just the power of suggestion, or placebo, but I would say there is more road feel as well. At higher speeds, it firms up more but maybe not quite as firm as it was pre-update.
  • Differential - Seems to be engaging smoother and less noisy at low speeds around the neighborhood. I would argue a noticeable upgrade for the price. I'm no expert but it seemed to work pretty damn well when exploring the new DSC update
  • DSC Update - In Sport+ with DSC left untouched there is definitely more freedom. In fact, I can't overstate how much natural it feels in Sport+ during oversteer. I mean, first of all, it allows for way more angle. And as it does intervene, it seems a little smoother. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect but this part of the update alone was worth the $130. Damn thing made me laugh out loud and a little nervous about my ability not to hoon the sh!t everywhere I go now.

All in, the two-day concierge eSys configuration by Kubax86set me back $310 but that involved an update to both the Nav and iStep system along with the custom settings so for LCI and M2Cs it's likely cheaper since it's less work. Regardless, the service experience was exceptional, the car is massively improved and I didn't have to interact with my brain dead local service manager or leave my house. What a time to be alive.

TLDR: If you own a OG M2 you should install the M2 CS software immediately and Kubax86 is just the guy to hook you up. If you're in a M2C, hit him up and find out what your options are. He's seems happy to offer guidance.

The full screen carplay update is indeed a top notch update - it transforms the carplay experience - really makes you wonder why BMW did what they did w the Hybrid setup?

I just think BMW wireless carplay in general is quite unreliable... it overheats the phone, has consistent skips in music and the interface sometimes takes a bit to load apps upon startup and even then it's not perfectly smooth... BMW needs to come up with a general update for the car on this... or perhaps Apple.

I’m late to the party with iOS 14.5 and the latest iDrive but for what it’s worth I’ve been really pleased with the performance of wireless CarPlay. On a 11 Pro using Apple Music, Siri works great from the steering wheel. Same goes for directions into Apple Maps.

From what I’ve read, that’s just an iOS update away from changing though.

2017 M2 ISTEP Upgrade

Hi there,

Just got a 2017 M2, and I wanted to see if anybody here updated to the latest ISTEP version, and how they did it, and if it's worth it.

The car right now has Bluetooth Apple Car Play, so I'm assuming it was built after August of 2017, but I want to see if an ISTP upgrade is worth it.

If anyone can advice, Kubax86?

You can find instructions on how to find your iLevel/iStep version in many places such as here.

Latest? F020-21-11-540.

What version is installed?

I just purchased kubax’s F8X ultimate pack from his website (CarPlay, CS updates, $299). This is for my 2016 OG which has ID4 and no CarPlay from the factory. Will update when complete!

Bumping this old thread... based on all the great reviews and recommendations for the CS diff and steering, I decided to use Kubax86 for the following on my 2017 OG M2:

BMW Firmware upgrade for NBTEvo + Apple CarPlay Fullscreen
https://bimmer-remote.com/products/i...lay-fullscreen

CS Diff/Steering/DSC for M2
https://bimmer-remote.com/products/c...ing-dsc-for-m2

Simple, painless, just as described (45 minutes). Not an iPhone user, but wanted the latest iDrive firmware (I was previously on NBTEvo_K). Wanted to try out the CS changes (only notice the steering on a quick test drive).

I had previously used BimmerCode and I was surprised all the changes were preserved.

No that's the only problem

However I sincerely doubt anybody would really want to do that

Supposed to give better characteristics to the car

Basically BMW's best for the M2

The "CS" updates are coded parameter changes not a flash. Yes, if you have esys and know what you are doing you can change them back.

Not sure why anyone would want to though. Just had mine updated and was well worth it. Steering and diff can't really tell on street driving, waiting for track day to really feel those. DSC very very noticeable on street and 1000x better than OG base setting.

Yeah without esys proficiencies your absolutely struck

But I agree there's no real reason to ever go backwards

My iStep was updated by my dealer and it's a huge improvement over stock

Just coded the CS package to my OG with these guys. Very good experience and easy to work with. If you're a Mac user it takes a little but of work to install all necessary software to your computer ( assuming you have an intel Mac ) but it wasn't bad. For $100 well worth it.
