Software update recall?
I just called and scheduled my 21 Comp for an oil change.
They said the car also has a recall for a software update and that they would need it all day. They also said this could be done at a later time if I didn't want to wait. Does anyone know about this recall? |

I had mine in Monday for a wheel touchup and it was flagged for a recall. It's the 3G Sunset for the telecom module. It didn't take all day. I notice some differences with the display though. Seems a little snappier, the map contours look a little different. It wiped all my presets. It didn't impact any of my main coding, but the warning message is now back on startup.

If it were literally a "recall" it would be visible via the MyBMW app. I only show the recall for the passenger side seat belt.

They told me it is for 'telematics update' (scheduling for my routine service this week) - was not listed on the auto-generated 'your 'bmw told us it needs service' email I got a week or two ago, so perhaps it just turned up.

They issued this SIB last year. The 3G stopped working in February it says. I doubt any 2021 cars were shipped with the old combox. My 2021 definitely has LTE. |

I'm wondering if the 4G module was there and it needed a software update. I doubt they'd have the part at the dealership sitting there. Maybe the CS came without it to save weight and now they adding stuff back in. Lol.
Mine was built Oct 2020. Odd that it's listed as a recall. That's what is strange to me. Did it have the wrong software loaded? Edit:. I hope that directions I send to my car from my phone app works better after this update. Last edited by medphysdave; 09-28-2022 at 02:16 PM.. |

I did ask for information and they said it was a "software update" recall but were not more specific.

this is the 2G recall:
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...61579-9999.pdf I just got this done during an oil change. A couple things got reset during that - and since the update my BMW navigation is stuck on "Loading...". Brought it back in and so far they couldn't figure it out. Said they see this error if any 3rd party SW was on the system, but they don't see any evidence that there was. Have to bring it back in and then BMW corp needs to look at it. They seem to think its some kind of activation issue...

2G has literally been turned off for several years. I don’t get it. I actually designed products using 2G radios inside and we had to migrate 4 years ago…

No, what I mean is I am confident there is no F87 shipped with a 2G module. The data wouldn't have ever worked. Traffic info and other stuff in iDrive would be completely non functional. I buy that older pre-LCI F87 could need a 3G to LTE replacement, but I don't think any F87 ever had a 2G radio.

Not worth it. I have a 2018 build M2c and I reject all software updates. I didn’t want them to lock my DME since it’s tunable via OBD from the factory.

Mine is in for it's 3 year/3rd oil change prior to the BMW Care plan expiring at the end of this month. It's also getting brake fluid flushed, spark plugs swapped, and whatever this software update is. Was told yesterday that it would be done same-day, but here we are on Thursday and still don't have it back yet. Not sure why BMW would have a time-based change for spark plugs at 36 months, especially given I'm at ~6,400 miles, but figured I might as well do it as it was free/included.

When I first opened this thread I was hoping bmw was upgrading the infotainment to full screen without coding it in.
Not sure why bmw won't do this for everyone. Didn't later MY '21 M2s get the full screen automatically? |

Yes. My 3/16/21 build has fullscreen CarPlay from the factory. I believe it was introduced with NBTEvoX, the final release that made it into the M2c. iDrive 6 lives on in the Supra.
