F87 M2 affected by Takata Airbag

A friend of mine reminded me to check the BMW AU recall page as his F80 LCI (II?) is affected.

Surprised to see my 2016 F87 M2 there as I did a check back in JAN 2018 and it wasn't there for sure. So the scale of the recall did extend recently. The recall notice says driver side airbag which is quite scary.

I'd recommend that everyone double check for all your BMW models.

https://www.bmw.com.au/recall

I've called BMW AU today and was told it is Takata airbag, at this point of time there is no recall action, will need to wait for snail mail to arrive in the future for proper replacement.

NOTE: I tried to pull some more details regarding the cause of recall. They said over time the condition of airbag (driver side) will deteriorate and will probably fail (at least not exploding with scattering metal pieces, hopefully).

Interesting fact: I know a guy who just ordered a LBB F87 LCI M2 from Vic, he did a check for his car and it wasn't affected. I guess it uses a different airbag (the car comes with Conti tyres lol).

Anyone knows more about the details regarding this particular recall, please share with us.

In fact, I am not 100% sure if the driver side airbag is Takata.

Interesting, I remember M2 was not affected though.
I checked mine, here's what it says. Mine is LCI by the way.

Edit: hmmm, seems like mine was affected, but at some stage the airbag had been replaced?

As mentioned in the 1st post, a guy I know who owns the F87 LCI, his M2 Pure is not affected. So the LCI models may have switched to a different OEM provider.

Try to see if you can pull more information from them. I need to know more about the potential risk.

Interesting how the first page showing which vehicles are affected doesn't even mention F87, so previously I'd never bothered entering my vin in.

Exactly, I read news about the recall but didn't mention M2, so didn't bother to check either.

My car is affected (July 17 build LCI) EDIT: just realised my 'recall' relates to the LCI dash update & though it's outstanding I've not experienced any issues.

There was a link or the like on the page which took me to a page where I confirmed my car VIN & personal details, nominated preferred dealership and after hitting 'submit' I received a message that the nominated dealership will contact me.

My lci isn’t affected, but that could be because it was sitting at the dealership for a few months before I snatched it up?

Also July build

Whew...just finished having the X5 air bags replaced.

My US M2 wasn't affected.

Is only an OZ issue? Strange.

Thanks for the reminder - I was pretty sure I'd previously checked, but given some of the comments on this thread I thought that I'd re-check ... in my case, its all clear (I'm in the same boat as nick_stp)

I had the airbags on my X6 replaced a couple of weeks ago: the same day that they were replaced I watched an episode of The Checkout where they go into great detail about the airbag replacement program. Its a really informative show generally and the information presented on the Takata airbag replacement process was excellent.

What I discovered through that show, is that BMW is replacing faulty Takata airbags with new Takata airbags. Off the back of this, I wrote to BMW and asked if this was the case for my X6, and sure enough, the dealer confirmed that new Takata airbags had been fitted. They have assured me that the new bags are fit for purpose, but I'm going to review independent advice in relation to this.

Cheers,

That's not the Takata airbag replacement - its the LCI Instrument Display software update. I think our cars were manufactured the same week, so good to see that your car (like mine) doesn't need the airbag replaced.

I'm somewhat astonished to see that LCI's (like David.m's) are needing their airbag replaced. These Takata issues have been known for a couple of years now ... and I'd have thought that car manufacturers would have scrapped the faulty bags..?

my cars coded, reckon they'll give me grief when I go in for the instrument cluster update?

After reading your post I went back & re-checked, my recall is for the LCI dash software update, I was fooled by all the Takata airbag references on the BMW webpage (& probably too lazy to use google translate when I first checked last night).

Mine was coded prior to having the recall applied - I saw the cluster update as an opportunity to code the car and then if that stuffed anything up (it didn't), the Cluster Firmware Update would set everything back to normal.

What is interesting is what did/didn't reset back to the "as shipped" state as part of the Cluster Firmware (its actually the entire firmware for the car - it gets a complete update). For example, I noticed that the seatbelt warning stuff I'd turned off didn't come back and neither did ASD (i.e. my Bimmercoding survived the firmware update) ... but the folding mirrors, reversing camera behaviour and stupid legal notice were erased/overwritten. Easy enough to fix again

Phew! I couldn't believe that BMW were still fitting faulty Takata airbags to new builds! It's a relief to know that's not the case, so thanks for letting everyone know

BTW, when you take your car in, you might want to instruct them to load the latest BMW maps onto the car. May as well have the dealer do the hard work!

I spoke to my dealer this morning and the Takata recall does affect earlier M2s. BMW only announced it last Monday. Letters are on their way to owners. Parts are being supplied. No need to stop driving or worry about it. Apparently.

If you log in as above you can nominate a dealer for the recall. They will be in touch when replacement parts arrive. No timeframe as yet.

I just checked, same!

WTF does this mean? I'll have to call BMW AU again tomorrow to clarify, so confusing.
