Experiencing wheel-hop issue with DSC OFF + Contis on second hand M2

I have to say, I'm 49 and have had mostly RWD manual trans cars all my life. RX-7, MR-2, Starion ESiR, Miata, S2000, Impreza STi, Exige, etc. And ALL of them would smoothly let go (even the AWD STi), especially in the rain. The Starion would get a little wheel hop here and there, but nothing major.

And this M2, I mean, it's terrible, no? I mean, it's not even fun. You're either at 10/10th's (which I'll never be) or you're hopping. Why has BMW not fixed this issue?? I mean, I can't even have a LITTLE fun in the rain.

What am I Missing?

Not sure what you are talking about. My M2 is sold in the rain.

Mine slides smoothly and predictably in corners - wet or dry and is easy to gather up.

Or are you talking about what used to be known (live axles generally) as axle tramp?

Mine doesn't do that either that I've noticed - with or without Traction Control.

Do you mean getting the rear wheels to spin? I can't say I've every had any hopping with the stock suspension or with the KW.

That being the case, I'm not sure what BMW needs to fix but my opinion is that BMW has zero interest in getting the car to 'let go' period!

I've got 23k mil on my '18 and not sure what you're talking about. I haven't experienced any wheel hop and I rag the shit out of it. Little issue in the rain, but I don't drive like an asshole on wet pavement either. Please expound, OP.

Perhaps you need better or newer tires. I have never had wheel hop and I have launched it plenty of times.

Guys, please, do a search on it, it's everywhere, and on the M3 and M4 as well. Common issue.

I have the stock Conti tires on the car, and they are new, literally less than a thousand miles on them.

I believe you. Just saying I've tracked, launched, and everything in between on Michelin's and no wheel hop. You came here for feedback, right? Perhaps your shitty tires.

I get it also. Doing a clutch drop at 4000rpm and the rear hops. Pretty annoying for a $55k car.

The tires are factory spec.

And I'm just wondering why BMW hasn't done something about it, like an educated answer, something along the lines that it would make the car handle worse, etc.

Since you're obviously aware of searching, you do understand the tire lottery with these cars. Conti's are absolute shit. Pony up for better tires.

I think the stock tires are fine for my driving style, and I like Conti's in general. The DWS06, and Extreme Contact have been some of the best tires I've ever owned. But of course, if you spend Michelin money you're going to get Michelin quality. I don't think I need it though. And for your edification, the wheel-hop issue goes way back before BMW started using the Conti's...

That was the extent of my advice. Best of luck!

Weird, my M2 has to be the smoothest car I've ever driven in terms of not having wheel hop at all. It's almost strange how smoothly the wheels start and stop spinning when driving hard. I'm on KW coils now but it was equally smooth on the OEM suspension. Not sure what some of your guys are getting or if it's related to tire/road surface, etc

I haven't noticed any wheel hop. Certainly nothing like my last Mustang GT which had wheel hop issues.

I’ve gotten wheel hop in Porsches too, so not isolated to BMW. But I haven’t had any wheel hop with my M2. Been pretty buttery smooth on burnout. Could be because I had worn out contis that love to slip. Just put 4S’s on, but haven’t had a chance to try and wear them out in 10k like the contis

I got Michelins and I have wheel hop as well. It's not necessarily the lack of traction, it's often too much traction.
The wheel hop on cars with IRS happens on the edge of traction so it depends on your driving style. If you launch carefully and avoid wheelspin you'll be ok. If you just dump the clutch at high RPMs you will get no traction at all and no wheel hop. But if you end up somewhere in between it could happen.

These guys designed better rear mounting bracket for the diff - https://www.kmpdrivetrain.com/produc...4-bracket-set/

But I don't know how much it will help with the wheel hop.

I've never dumped the clutch in this car, and never will. The hop happens for me when I'm leaving the car wash, or when it's wet outside. I turn all the nannies off expecting to get some nice low-speed sideways action and I get hopping instead.
