All you guys are doing is overriding the factory setting of closed-flap by default on startup. This is the default to accelerate cat heating which (on paper) improves emissions as well as limit excess noise.

By immediately pushing DSC you're disabling all of that.

Has anybody tried this after the car is good and hot?

Yes...works exactly the same when car is fully warmed up..lots of pops and crackles.

Has nothing to do with CAT heating or emmisions. It is only for sound.

Tested this out on my DCT. Amazing. I giggled like a little girl. Can't wait for the next time I'm in a covered carpark.

For DCT owners:

HIDDEN EXHAUST MODE

1) Warm-up engine
2) Move gear selector into N for DCT
3) Press DSC button once
4) Rev to beyond 4K and let off
5) Giggle like school-girl on over-run

If driving - Step 2 is Sequential 'S' ? Does not work in 'D'.

This mode is my favorite in city driving for obvious reasons. Great combo of fun and comfort for "rougher" terrain

Why is this relevant for DCT only? You're not being clear

Because it doesn't work if you're in 'D' for DCT. 6MT works just by pressing the button.

This is an awesome thing. With my 6MT, it gurgles beautifully when I'm in traffic. BMW is wonderful for putting such a fun exhaust as a standard feature

I like those wheels. What size tires are they? They almost look like 255/45 series not 40.

This is probably covered in the eight pages of this thread but I'll ask anyway. Is the stock exhaust a flap/valve exhaust? If not how does it achieve its changes in sound in the different drive modes? Also how does an MPE factor into all of this being a flap style exhaust? If one has an MPE what would be the loudest configuration Sport+ and Track Mode (exhaust)? Or would it be this "hidden" mode i.e. Comfort + MDM (Traction) plus Track Mode (Exhaust)? All this configuring has me confused and doesn't exactly line up with the M2's reputation of being a more analog back to basics machine.

True!
It only works if the DCT is in sequential/manual mode. It pops and gurgles like hell. Much more than sport/+
When in full automatic mode (D) the thing is very quiet, like normal comfort mode.

You can see all exhaust modes in technical training manual pdf, downloadable in the sticky documents thread of M2 discussion.

The OEM exhaust has flaps.

AFAIK you have 3 different settings regarding those flaps/noise:

-sport/sport + = loud, some pops and gurglea
-comfort = more quiet; almost no pops and gurgles
-traction mode = loud with exaggerated pops if DCT is in sequential mode

Traction mode in D sounds like comfort.

Traction is a mode by itself - you can access it pressing once DSC, whether you are in comfort or sport mode. It is a mode by itself with similar settings to confort in steering, accelerator response, etc. All details in the pdf of technical training.

Thanks for this. I'll review that document. One last question; does Sport+ engage "Traction MDM" mode or is this always a separate individual function? If you have to engage it separately when in Sport+ do you still get the loudness of Sport+ and also the extra pops and gurgles of the Traction mode?

I believe Sport + also has MDM mode on. To get traction off you have to long hold the traction button which put's you into a separate mode which is like Sport settings but no traction control. Feels to me though like it holds gears longer like sport+ though if in D with DCT, but that could just be how it feels to me.

It's sort of intuitiveness because there is a mode selector with 3 options, comfort, sport, sport+ Then a separate button that seems like it would then modify the traction options, but that's not how it is. The traction button basically accesses two other modes for a total of 5 modes. 6 if you count traction/MDM + sequential for louder exhaust pops, but that doesn't change the cars driving character.

It's more like comfort, sport, sport+ (with MDM traction), traction/MDM (with comfort throttle), traction off (sport throttle and steering). I think that's correct...

Longitudinal moment management is the same in sport+ and in MDM mode.

Thanks! So even if DSC button is pushed and held, turning off all stability, while driving, you won't hear the extra fireworks, UNLESS you're shifting gears manually? And, when DCT defaults to automatic mode, the extra sound stops, until you start shifting again?

Unless you turn the car off and back on, or move the lever back to "D", the DCT will never default or revert back to auto.

And you don't need to push and hold the DSC button....a single press only, which does not turn off all stability.

Perfect, thanks. Any idea if a similar option exists on the M3/4?

No problem! Not sure about the M3/4....I don't think I've ever heard any owners mention it.
