Now I have to be careful because there are few on this board who will say that I'm not seeing the big picture and it still makes sense to some people to lease the 2-series (it rarely does).
Makes sense, for BMW . I wonder how many people will turn it back in without thinking twice about the market value vs the residual.

Some interesting fact - M3 (S55) is less than 100 lbs heavier than a 335i (N55), but M2C (S55) is close to 300lbs heavier than a M235i (N55). The numbers may be not accurate but you get the idea. What special treatment the F80/82 receives that F87 does not outside of the apparent carbon roof and carbon driveshaft (not anymore since 2018/10) is beyond me.

In my opinion, the entire M lineup for 2 series is to be blamed for the weight, the M2 OG just hide it a little bit with a less powerful and lighter engine is all.
S55 itself weighs only 2kg/4.4lbs more than the N55. Most of the extra weight comes from other areas. Bigger brakes and the dual pipe exhaust system alone add close to 70lbs together. 788M wheels add another 10+ lbs. And then there is the extra weight that comes from the additional cooling, M sport seats etc that account for the remaning ~30lbs extra weight (The weight difference between US spec M2 and M2C is ~110lbs, source). In other words, for example, people in Europe can configure their M2C with blue brakes, 437M wheels, OG M2 seats and save significant amount of weight.
Don't be over defensive man. Radiator and exhaust are the integral parts of the engine. M4 Seats actually are a hair lighter as I weighed when I swapped seats. So that magazine breakdown article isn't 100% flawless plus the source of their data is unknown.

Anyway, my point has been that if we criticize on weight, it isn't the M2C but the M2 OG that is to be criticized for it in the first place. BMW didn't try remotely hard enough with F87 weight reduction if anything at all and M2C just carries over what's already there. Nothing else.

I wasn't even referring to breakdown article which had some inaccuracies in some areas. However, I see your point so fair enough

As for the seats, M4 seats do weigh more than OG M2 seats (at least when both are electric and heated). A friend of mine just gave away his OG M2 seats and before letting them go I asked him to weigh them. I think the comparison was like 57lbs for the M4 seats vs 52.x lbs for the OG M2 seats. This should be easy to verify via BMW ETK anyway.

F87 is supposed to be the entry level M car so I am not surprised at all. I am sure the business case for F87 requires the fewest number of bespoke components as possible.

I can subjectively verify this...I didn't actually weigh them, but i lifted them back to back during my swap and the OG seats felt lighter. BUT the Msport seats are firmer (some may say less comfortable over longer periods of time) and seat pocket is lower than the OG seats.
