I agree with gthal Apparently people also confuse engine sounds with number of cylinders as well.
Actually, Subarus (at least some of them, not all these days) sound distinctive because of their unequal length headers. That's what generates the "boxer rumble"...the unequally spaced exhaust pulses.

The new WRX, for example, still has a boxer...but no more rumble, because it runs equal-length headers. Sound much like any other turbo 4, as will the P-car...with slight variations, as you said, based on primarily the exhaust configuration.
