Thanks for posting. Nice review. Filmed at Gingerman Raceway in Michigan. #GoBlue!

The M5 sounds awesome and is much nicer quality wise. But you always hear it described as: blindingly fast and well handling "for its weight". It is also huge!
I already find the F3x to be about as big as I would ever want to go and the first thing my wife said when she got in the loaner G20 I am driving now is "OMG this thing is way too big!". The M2 has pretty much the same track width as the M5 but a wheelbase almost 11 inches shorter! |

I think you have to figure out what you want from the car. The interior and ride quality will both be a lot better in the M5. If you drive sedately most of the time and don't track, I think you would be better served staying with the M5. If you track the car or want to have more fun, then the M2 is the way to go. If you have the money, I'd personally suggest you keep the M5 and get a dedicated sports car. It's pretty hard to beat a combo of something like an M5 and a Boxster Spyder. |

I lost interest in all M5s after the E39 (the E60 was interesting, but the mighty S65 was not suited for use as a DD). M5s continue to be fantastic autobahn cruisers, but they have become utensils rather than enthusiast's cars - point and click. And indistinguishable from similar offerings from Mercedes.
Rant over. So, if you are asking me if you should trade your much faster, four-wheel drive, automatic supersedan for a manual, RWD coupe? Why yes, I do think you should.

If the OP complains about the ride in the M5C, he probably won't like the M2C any better in that regard.
I've driven both (and M3 and M4) at the BMW performance center, and when it came time to buy, I bought the M2. I could afford the M5 (well.... not as a toy but as my DD) but chose the M2. And that left money on the table for a comfortable DD. Of course, had the M5 been available with a manual, that might have made the choice a bit more difficult. FYI I've had 3 E39 M5s, so I tend to lean that way. Unfortunately the E60 and F10 both left me cold.

I can only say from experience.. and that experience was driving in my friends M5 (non-comp) that the M5 felt like a very nice lux cruiser. Yes, it is a missile, but it really had no soul - almost reminded me of my friends M550 - dare I say a bit boring.
And having had the M2, which I agree with many people here, which was really fun, it did miss a lot of the niceties of the M5 - and I mean a lot. I personally ended up moving up the the M3. While still missing a lot of those niceties on the M5, it does check a lot of boxes that meant something to me (seating for 5, incredible leather, etc.) while still providing a great DD experience albeit with a slightly rough ride here in Chicago. Still, it feels alive - something I could not say about my short drive in the M5 or my long drive in the M550. Just me personally - but I would at least go test drive a M3. Worst case, the M4 if you don't need the 4 doors.

I drove the M2C, and the ride quality on that car is just perfect for what it is. The reason I complained about the ride quality in the M5 is because that car is unnecessarily harsh for a 4 door luxury m car. I can bet you anything that if they would make the ride much smoother, like on the e60 m5 at least, it’s track performance wouldn’t suffer even a bit considering the excellent adaptive dampers! I am truly puzzled for the reasons behind it’s suspension being so stiff... maybe it is some stupid new bmw marketing thing where people think that if the car is stiffer it will handle much better.... Now if I would be buying a manual M2 or an M4, I would automatically expect the ride to be harsh as these are real sports cars and I have absolutely nothing against that. As of the M5 Vs M2, maybe it is a better idea to grab one of the last manual M4’s before their production is finished in June 2020. |

I agree with your comment that some of these car are unnecessarily harsh. Especially when they have adjustable suspensions. Can't I have a comfort mode that is actually comfortable?

M2C will seem super basic/cheap on the interior if you're coming from an M5. The M5 interior is really nice, you're going to lose that level of luxury. But when it comes down to driving dynamics and handling... M2 all day. I liked the M5 but it's a boat on wheels. I daily/commute with my M2 and it is ridiculously fun. Great acceleration and small/nimble enough to zip around people with ease.

With the F80 M3, the take rate for 6MT had dropped to 15.65% globally. The numbers may be different for the M4. We'll see. We need a "save the manuals" emoticon.

I suspect those countries are new to automatics and simply love them - here we (most of us) grew up on autos and like the new concept of "manuals"

Really? I consider M2CS to be another bmw marketing scheme... if I really want a CS, there is a bootmod3, and a whole lot of performance parts available, choose your poison... There is a nice M4 CS currently sitting at my dealer right now that no one wants, and all things considered, I would rather save $10-$20000 and get a manual M4, and flash M4CS steering, rear diff and engine... or even a GTS for under $1000. Again paying $20000 extra for a CS alcantara trim, missing door panels, stereo and center console is not exactly my thing...

Just want to reiterate this. While the M2 interior is nice, it's not $60,000 nice IMO. Lots of hard plastic, subpar sound system, and stiff seats. Now granted I, and I'm sure everyone else here, didn't buy the car because they wanted to worlds nicest interior, but definitely something to note, especially coming from an M5.

My M2 replaced a C7 Corvette. So it was quite an improvement in nearly every regard, quality of materials, assembly, glue smell and ease of entry. Performance... well, they're different animals. The Corvette may have the upper hand in raw performance numbers, but the M2 is more fun to drive.
