Rodents caused $10k damage to my M2
I parked my M2 outside in my driveway for a week, instead of my garage. I take it for a short drive and my check engine light comes on. The dealership says rodents have totally destroyed my wire harness, some sensors and the fire wall insulation. The repair is going to be $10k and take 3 weeks.
I have other newish cars which I park in my driveway and never had any problems. When I search this issue on Google, I see a lot of people having this same problem with very new cars. I'm wondering if others have had this problem before... Thanks |

Within the last couple of years, I've came across quite a couple of threads on related rodent damage, where even some vehicles where declared a total loss, as a result..
It seem like a common occurrence and there is only so much you can do prevent this.. Lucky for me, I'm considered a Yahweh of sort to a bunch of feral cats, that owe me like a million favors; so they protect my vehicle like soldiers on the forth.. https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=24888194 |

We had someone with a GT3RS get their wiring harness munched.
They had I believe pelican insurance and i know it cost north of 23,000. Gotta give props that insurance gave us no issues. |

I heard of this happening to an older e28, and those cars are somewhat prone to it because the wiring harness is made with soy-based insulation. |

Drop some Bounce Dryer sheets under the hood.
Swap them out when they start to lose their strength. Works perfect for me...

That is terrible but very plausible. I kept telling my father to keep the birdseed out of his garage and sure enough rodents attacked his aging A6 and left it inoperable and needed a tow. Mice had all the wiring harness chewed up but was looked over and fixed by our Indy. Only cost him about $500 but still a avoidable situation. I use a combo of mouse traps and sonic rodent deterrence and never have a problem in my garages. I am very proactive about rodents as I know what they can do. Keep all food out of your garages. I don’t even leave an empty beer can on my workbench.

I had mice do a nice number on my M235i. My damage was only $1,500 with the dealer rebuilding part of the wiring harness.
The problem was discovered when the dealer couldn’t reset the service indicator after they changes my oil. |

This damage is covered by your auto insurance. They will pay.

Yep, last summer a rat made it's way into our garage (luckily the M was in a different garage) and damaged my X3. Comfort access failed, had to unlock with the fob. Total cost to repair was close to $900. We discovered how it got in (small crevice) and fixed it before the repair was completed (3 days) by the dealership. Dealer mentioned it had to do with soybean products being used in BMW products.

I'm sorry about what happened. Recently, rodents ate almost all the wires on my car, they were from soy... This is good for nature, but it turned out to be bad for my car and wallet. I spent about $ З000 to replace the wiring. I almost cried... After a while, I found a bat inside the grate. I don't even know how she got there and why this place on my car is so vulnerable and open. I had to close the place myself and call the bat removal service and clean out my garage.

Happened to my friends F80 in his garage, they were drawn in by a garbage bag which he hadn't thrown out yet. This is why I never leave garbage bags in the garage or even just near the door leading into the garage.

happened to my Boxster in storage at my sister's house. Mice did $17k in damage... new interior panels everywhere, a bunch of random interior bits, and a whole new wiring harness. Work took 6 months due to parts availability. Porsche had to make a wiring harness for the car.
