I removed the radiator support on the top so I could see the end of the stock intake snorkel. You might be abel to do the whole thing without that part... Right now im leaving the grill out because - my hands take a beating snapping that thing out. Ive done it 3 times and I feel my good luck coupons running out, dont want to snap off a piece. will have a final .stl file soon (just want to verify these fit as I want them to)

No one has really touched on the fact of why BMW placed the OEM scoops like they do:
1) Keeps dirt and sandy debris from flying directly into the intake. Not a huge deal considering the car is running a filter. It simply means the filter might clog up a bit faster. 2) Most importantly, the air slamming into radiator at speed creates pressure on the frontal face of the radiator, thus the air pushes itself into the intake scoop placed directly in this area and as the intake is sucking in air, this pressurized air will take the path of least resistance and head for the scoop. This improves throttle response (maybe power but only VERY marginally). By placing the scoop forward facing, you lose the pressurization effect. It can also create turbulence along the leading edges of the scoop, thus somewhat lessening the ability of the air to shove itself into the intake and ultimately taking away some throttle response as well.

Simulation software also suggested that the shape (velocity stack) does accelerate the incoming air a little bit. I agree the intake pressure might be lower because of this loss of pressurization effect, but then again the forward facing inlet should build pressure as the car moves through the air. If we agree that flow is proportional to the pressure gradient... Then whichever design increases the proximal pressure the most would create the best flow... But this assumes the shape of the inlets are the same, which is where I worry about the sharp angle of the stock M3/M4 inlet. Another factor to consider is the the secondary hot air port in the OEM piece from the filter to the inlet nozzle. This port would likely lose a lot of the pressure built up on the inlet before it reached the filter... Again it's all speculative physics. I certainly have no basis to say this design is superior to the OEM M3/M4 but... I do not expect it to be inferior (hope it isn't!). While running the prototypes I have noticed improved throttle response in the 4k range. But I will test everything and then we can see the numbers.

I did put drain holes... so rain that impacts the surface of the intake should be able to drain out. And the rain has kind of a long path to the filter... but I suppose it would depend on how much rain and how fast you are traveling...

Gives you an idea of how stealth the install is (zoom into the grill)... and if the light hits the grills, they're (fairly) close to OEM looking. Testing now and hoping to get another set installed soon for more data collection!! (ahem, Commanderwiggin ) Shout out to Project_F87 for helping me out early on with his engineering input, and huge shout out to Commanderwiggin who has really gotten me across the threshold of completion to a finalized product! Install guide is being worked on as we speak...

So I got the installation finished up with the latest revisions from Malakas. I will say the quality of the fitment is really awesome and I'm happy to have taken a part in this project. Everything lines up very well and I followed a powerpoint instruction manual that was provided. It was all very well done and I'll let the photos speak for themselves.
Now as for install, this does require cutting so anyone looking to do this yourselves, it will require a dremel cutting tool of sorts and expect it to not be 100% perfect as you will need to cut a little extra out in order to finagle the duct through...however if you're careful you can minimize the amount of cutting. To seal up any edges I recommend Gorilla All Weather Duct Tape to encourage all the airflow to go through the radiator. Looking at the rest of the radiator shroud sealing it definitely isn't anything to write home about from the factory so I wouldn't be overly concerned about some small gaps if you had them but obviously always encourage it to be sealed as much as possible. As for data...that will come later when I compile some results. I haven't driven it yet but I have lots of before data that I will try my best to directly compare. The unfortunate thing is that there is actually no direct intake air temperature measurement before the turbo. The intake air temperature is actually after the intercooler so it's common to see the air temp higher than ambient due to the warm coolant running through the intercooler (and warm engine bay). This being said I feel good knowing the air is actually coming from the outside of the car rather than the engine bay. Again I can't thank Malakas enough for making the effort on the design, initial testing along with the installation powerpoint. It's been a real pleasure doing this project.

Question about the straight pipe you're holding up (that you capped the rectangular hole on)--
The M3/M4 has a very a similar system, except that the stock intakes are 90 degrees to the radiator. The straight pipe has the exact same uncovered rectangular area. So, the question is: if BMW installed (more or less) these intakes on the M3/M4, why did they leave the hole there on the pipe? This has been bothering me for a while-- when I had my M3/M4 intakes installed at Carbahn, they covered up the rectangular area just like you did-- but I don't know if that's the smartest idea or not-- BMW *had* to have a reason to leave them open, yeah? Could covering them induce air starvation at higher rpms? If not, wouldn't leaving them open sort of defeat the whole point of the snorkels? Curious to hear your thoughts on this, as I've been toying with going in and reopening up the rectangular holes. TIA-- R. |
