One-handed with the M2 around Lime Rock Park circuit

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
This video shot at the Lime Rock Park circuit (Lakeville - Connecticut) illustrates the driver-friendly nature of the M2. Better don't try this with a 1M.

Some may say that the M2 is less pure, because helping the driver a tad too much. Others may say that it's safer and compliant.

I'm a big fan of M2 and came very close to buying one..... Soooooo close. I believe the "pure" part comes more from the 1M can be gotten with less stuff. There is no digital engine sound enhancement, hydraulic steering, no comfort mode or button, no auto blip, no sunroof option, no smokey burnout feature, no automatic option with launch control and you can get one with no I-drive, no power folding mirrors and lighter manual seats with more headroom. If you want to launch a 1M you have to be very careful and learn how to do it well. If you want to do a burnout, the car doesn't help you do it. This is where the "pure" comes from not because it has a bad habit of kicking the tail out.

The irony is that what attracted us to BMWs was great handling! Especially back in the day of American muscle cars with terrible handling and braking so I think it's awesome that they fixed the suspension tuning in the M2! It is a better car overall.

As 1M owners we sometimes try to explain that even though M2 is a better car we still prefer the 1M, as does Chris Harris and the Carfection dude because of one simple thing.
It's exciting at lower speeds.

That is why I picked it over M3 after wanting an M3 for 20 years. The M3 was also a better car. You could cruise at 110 mph and felt like 85 mph. In order to feel excitement you had to wail the motor to 8k RPM and be going fast which is difficult in the US. On the other hand the 1M was fun even close to legal speeds and the tail happy nature kept you on your toes. You could drive a mountain pass and you are nervous at lower speeds. When you are going on a mountain road now, You can achieve faster speeds without upsetting the M2 so you are going back the M3 formula of cars that require more speed to feel dangerous excitement which doesn't make sense on public US Roads . It makes sense on track and German autobahns.

Car and Driver said it best when reviewing the Cayman. They said it was the best road carving machine ever. The downside was that it was so good at straightening curves that it took some of the fun of taking curves. So that is why some of us still prefer the 1M, not saying better just explaining why we prefer a less perfect car to a perfect one. I also speak not just as an original 1M owner stuck with a 1M. I sold my first one and waited for M2. I was first on list for one but changed my mind and bought a 1M again. It was like breaking up with my high school sweetheart and having a date with the hot homecoming queen and realizing that my sweetheart might not be as hot, but I prefer her.

As far as this video goes, it would be more fun if they did it in a 1M with one hand!

I saw this in another blog and people whom were at the event commented in the thread. Apparently they were driving the M2 like assholes all day and had horrible track etiquette. And so much so that they crashed in a session and ruined everyone else's sessions as they waited for the two to pull them out and back into the pits.

So one handed driving.......yeah real cool :eye roll:

Color me unimpressed.

If you're interested in an "exciting" car try the MZ3/MZ4 coupes.
