Shell 93 now available in Vancouver

Recently saw that we have shell 93 fuel available in Vancouver now.
I've always used shell 91 (ethanol free), worth switching to 93? Is the 93 ethanol free too?

Not too sure really, I was using 94 at Chevron.

They aren't promoting it as ethanol free....
It would be great if it was.

...from a gas discussion site;

Quote:
Does Shell gas contain ethanol in Canada?
Shell 91, (or V-Power 93) and most of the other brand “premium” gasolines do not have ethanol.
The Canadian regulation requires 10% ethanol average in its fuel, by volume sold.
So your lowest tier (usually 87 octane) will have 10% to 15% ethanol in it.
The mid-range gas (89 octane) will have 5% to 7% ethanol.

does shell gas contain ethanol?

Just so, does Shell gas contain ethanol?
No. All gasoline brands have both pure and ethanol–containing gasoline under the same brand names.
For example, Shell V-Power ranges from 91 to 93 octane both with and without added ethanol.
It just varies from station to station, and it’s up to the station owner whether or not to sell pure gas.

If this is true that is fantastic news!

Before fuel in Canada ranked as follows:

1) Husky 94 - true 94 octane fuel (now extinct)
2) Petro 94 - good in the summer, but as soon as winter hit they changed their formulation into winter gas and it became terrible.
3) Shell 91 - extremely consistent gas.
4) Chevron 94 - imo this was worse than shell 91, my tuners extensive testing on sti's showed this fuel knocked more than shell 91. Likely because Chevron wanted to make an ethanol free fuel and thus was forced to use a more expensive base stock to achieve the higher octane. But instead likely cheaped out on said base stock and a result is crap 94 octane gas.

So if shell is coming to Canada with their 93 this is fantastic news because shell is absolutely an amazing company, their oils are top knotch with GTL technology, and as evident in the USA their 93 gas is extremely good quality and the important thing is that it is consistent. Regarding ethanol or no ethanol I wouldn't mind either way, since our cars have teflon based fuel lines so that is not a concern and the HPFP and fuel rails are rated for E98 fuel despite not having the flow to reach that level, and the LPFP is rated for atleast E15 as per bosch. The DME is also capable of adjusting fuel trims for said ethanol concentration so no worries there either. Any concern with ethanol was related to old cars, but shouldn't be a problem at all with bmw and their state of the art technology.

Their 91 is ethanol free, I have tested it with my ethanol tester and there was zero alcohol. It was pure gasoline - which is why I use it as my base stock when I mix it with e85 to achieve real E10.

Ive tested the new shell 93. Its anywhere from 6 to 9 percent ethanol rn. Im able to run stage 2 93 bm3 map with it. Some minor timing corrections in 1 or 2 cylinders but nothing crazy like the timing corrections i was getting with chevron 94. Cant even reliably run 91 maps with chev 94. Shell 93 so far has oroven to be way superior.

That's good to hear. I think she'll is using winter gas right now hence why it's not exactly 10%, which is what it needs to be to really hit 93 octane - since the ethanol acts as an octane booster (cheap but not a bad way to make 93 octane w/o the expensive Petro chemical base stocks). I did hope for pure 93 w/o ethanol, the. I could have added some e85 to make e10, and that would likely be 95 octane which would be insanely good. The stock tune probably wouldn't even see a bit of timing correction regardless of ambient temps.

Anyways when did you notice shell 93 in your area?

I really hope it comes to all of Canada, I really really want me some shell 93, since husky 94 is gone and Petro kind of sucks.

It was first trialled at a west vancouver station last month and they were selling the stuff out once the car community realized they had it and then shell rolled it out to the other station about couple weeks after that. There is a shell station 5 mins away from me that now has 93 and im so happy about it. I think this is the same stuff protunjngfreaks uses to tune their cars out in ontario coz the car absolutely loves it with the 93 tune on it. Local audi rs3 group tested this on one of their cars and gained 15 whp over chevron 94

Anyone know what exact shell stations are going to get the 93? hoping either the one on Hastings near Kensington Plaza, or the one on St. John's in Port Moody do end up getting it sooner rather than later!

Hmm, I'm located in Ontario and have been told PTF uses either Esso 93 or Petro 94 here. Curious which one of the two you think is equivalent.

I'm running Stg2 91 OTS on Petro 94 right now. Haven't tried Esso but I know the Shell 91 won't cut it.

Imo Shell 93 is much better than Petro 94, Petro tends to be inconsistent in the winter. In the summer it's ok.

I believe PTF tunes based on logs they receive around the world as well, then manipulates the maps accordingly. As a result I may favor better quality 93 from around the world.

Yeah I get the occasional minor timing pull on the 91 map despite running Petro 94. I'll be running stock tune and Shell 91 in the winter.

I really hope we get Shell 93 here!

I hope we get shell 93 Canada wide.

Minor timing pulls are inevitable on ots maps, only custom tunes can effectively eliminate this phenomenon.

I don’t know how accurate this is, but why don’t you try the gas station locator and filter by their nitro gas. I know it doesn’t say specifically 93 versus 91, but when I tried it not all of the shell gas stations around me came up

PS Anyone here in Vancouver (or knows somebody who is) running a BM3 tune and would be willing to help me install mine?

For beers or I would gladly pay for their time!

Wish it was available across Canada, now that husky 94 is gone all I have access to is Petro 94 (meh) and chevron 94 (imo worse than 91 from shell). So I'm relegated to either running Petro 94 or bending my own e10 mix with e85 and shell 91

I agree.....
In Ontario, I use Petro 94 on track days and shell 91 otherwise.

This is good news to have another higher octane option available in the Vancouver area. Only one Shell station in Richmond but I will check it out the next time I need to fill up. 30 litre rationing still in effect.

Man you guys in Vancouver are so lucky, I guess this is a little bit of a reward for having the worst gas available in Canada for such a long time lol. I mean you guys didn't have any good 94 octane options (no husky 94) and only had chevron which imo is worse then shell 91. So I'm glad you guys finally have proper gas there, but I'm really hoping it comes to every major city in Canada.
