Does the new 93 have ethanol in it? I thought I had read that part of the compromise was that Shell was no longer going to be ethanol free for highest octane fuel.

And I thought that was going to roll out across more of Canada, or at least we were going to start getting ethanol in the 91 here in Ontario?

Yes up to 10%. But that's not really a bad thing, imo it's a really good thing because ethanol is a cheap way to spike the octane in fuel allowing for true 93 octanes to be made (if the blender does a good job ensuring exactly 10% ethanol is present and the base stock is high quality - and shell is damn good at making quality gas). If you look at chevron 94 in BC for instance, that fuel is ethanol free and it performs worse than shell 91 as per data logging dyno testing by alot of gtr owners. Even my sti tuner told me not to run chevron 94, and it would even be better to run shell 91 because it was consistent while chevron is not.

Ethanol also provides cooling to the cylinder due to its evaporative effect and it burns alot cleaner than gasoline resulting in less deposits. There's literally no reason to fear ethanol anymore on a modern day car, especially a BMW since BMW uses Teflon based fuel lines, Bosch hpfps which are rated to e98 and Bosch lpfps which are rated to e15. Literally there is nothing to fear about using ethanol, all those scare tactics about rotting or degredation of the fuel system components are nonsense on a modern day BMW.

Holy crap, I have shell 93 octane locally to me now - ready from the pump! I am so excited right now and really am excited out of my mind. Finally I am going to have good fuel available to me once again, and this really will be the best fuel available in Canada since shell is known for their superb quality and consistency of fuels. So my car will now only use shell fuel and shell oil.

Here are my plans:

1) in the next few days or weeks I will be filling my m2 up with shell 93, I will be taking a sample to verify how much ethanol is in it.

2) I will try to data log this fuel and compare it to my previous data logs on husky 94 and petro 94 and see how well shell 93 stacks up. I fully expect shell 93 to blow these two other fuels out of the water in terms of knock prevention. I will also try to log chevron 94 and see how well that does, with and without some e85 mixed in to get E10. This will be dependent on if I have time this summer and may take weeks or months to complete.

Overall I am really excited about this and really hope shell starts making this more available at every station.

Whereabouts in Canada did you find Shell 93? I'm in Toronto Ontario and haven't seen it yet.

you google every shell gas station in you area, then click on website. It will take you to the gas stations website and tell you what fuels they have and when it was updated. It generally is updated frequently so you will get accurate info.

Someone told me on facebook my city had it, and I confirmed that the station they said had it did have it, and I also found one more after looking through the entire city and every station in it.

Thank you! Looking forward to your test! I hope to see the same results you're expecting as well. Never been a huge fan of running Petro 94.

edit: using the Shell app's station map, there's now a filter at the bottom for "Shell V-Power NiTRO+ 93". However, I panned throughout the Canadian geography and only showed 3 results in BC. I guess this app/data source is lagging a bit behind. Will try the google method.

Yeah I'll do my best to get some data, but no guarantees if I'm too busy this summer. But I'm excited for shell 93.

The Google method is better imo, hope you have some stations locally.

All the Shell stations in the metro Vancouver area have the 93 to my knowledge, have been using it exclusively since last fall.

I haven't seen one Shell station in the Greater Toronto Area with anything higher then 91 octane.

How many kms do you all typically get? I just had my 2020 M2C come out of summer storage, took it to Pfaff BMW for oil change and service, and since I've been driving it I'm only getting about 300 kms on a full tank.

Yeah I get about 360 km of range or so, it depends. But the m2's gas tank is really small which is the main issue, and of course the fuel warning comes on quite early (I coded mine to be alot later).

I just filled up with shell 93 here and some things to mention was:

1) My tank was about 1/4 full of old petro 94 so I will have to burn off this first tank before I can do any comparisons.

2) I forgot my fuel jug so I couldn't do a sample for ethanol.

3) The fuel had the sweet smell to it (like ethanol fuel typically smells) so there defintely is ethanol in it, how much is unknown for now.

Just wanted to update you guys on my findings, I just got to sample shell 93 octane and my suspicions about the gas smelling sweet just like ethanol blended fuels smell were correct - it does contains ethanol. To be exact it contains ~10% ethanol, likely on the dot.

Here is an image of my fuel tester - note I did not add enough fuel, the miniscus was just a hair or two below the fuel line. Had I added enough fuel the ethanol reading would be perfectly at E10.

This likely means it is true 93 octane because they blended ethanol to their excellent 91 octane fuel making E10 93 octane just like they have in the states. So we likely have the same great fuel the US does, I will confirm this with some data logging soon.

Still nothing in the Greater Toronto Area. However, Shell officially mentions 93 is currently available in Alberta and BC:

That's unfortunate to hear.

I unfortunately did not get a chance to data log shell 93 this summer due to work, so maybe next year,

That’s a shame. I’d really like to update my stage 2 tune to 93 octane but not overly comfortable doing that with petro 94.

I’m in GTA as well. Petro-Canada 94 is crap, but I’ve gotten really good results using Esso 93 octane which we have widely available here. Why has nobody mentioned/tested Esso 93 which we have had for years widely available in Ontario? They also say it contains up to 10% ethanol and could be just as good as the shell 93 blend in BC for all we know.

I heard Esso 93 was decent, super stores 94 I heard was also good.

Yes, I’d just trust a bigger company name like Esso 93 to be more consistent, even the winter mix blend was not bad so it seems to be solid for an all year round solution for stage 2 93 tunes in Ontario/GTA.

Superstores 94 is actually mobil1 which is a "huge brand", their technology comes from formula 1 partnered with red bull racing, the same applies with shell and Ferrari. However I heard on face book there was rumblings that Mobil 1 94 is actually derived from husky 94, and outperforms shell 93. I will have to log for myself to check, but that'll be next year.

I’ll have to check that out, no idea where those stations are in the gta area. Esso is definitely convenient as you can find them at every corner, never seen the superstores stations yet. A quick google search shows me the mobil1 gas stations are using “synergy fuel technology” this is exactly the same as what Esso stations advertise for their fuel as well.

Yeah it might be the same fuel but I'm not sure.

First and only station to appear on the app showing Nitro 93 in the GTA. Not sure if it's a mistake. Anyone try it yet?
