Absolute scum. They deserve to be shot.

I keep my keys in a faraday bag to safeguard against this.

A lot of the stolen cars are broken for parts to put a written off car back on the road, which is then sold.

Faraday bags are cheap. They work. I use one whenever my car is parked ANYWHERE outside and I'm closeby it still (work, shopping, etc). I am sorry you had to deal with these asshats. Glad it turned out better than I would have expected, though.

Cars like the M2 need a proper garage.

At the very least take the time to put on a car cover.
The metallic lined zip loc bags work well and should prevent this but, yes a garage is preferred.

I'd cover my car nightly regardless.

Thieves for the most part are lazy and don't like dealing with anything to complex.

Am I right in saying this theft was made possible due to comfort access? If you don't have comfort access this type of theft isn't possible, right?

Also, sorry for the discomfort caused to you OP. I've had a similar experience. It can be mentally exhausting for weeks after. That said, I'm also very happy for you that you got your car back, and before they could do any damage to it.

Yes I believe that's why it works so well without the key.

The suitcase boosts the signal making it seem as if the FOB is in the interior of the car.

Terrible but glad you are ok

Doesn't the new comfort keys only transpond when keys are moving now?

I heard the the G20 now has a function that the key fob doesn't emit a signal when lying flat and not moving. Might help. Don't know if it works while in your jacket pocket and not exactly flat.

My guess is that it's due to the fact that

1. Cars are often parked outside unlike the US where most people have garages

And

2. You're a only few hours away from a different country so getting away with a theft is theoretically easier

This seems like poor design of the security interface of BMW's fobs. They key fob should not be able to just give out the radio signal to anything ie. the thieves' scanners. They should be using a secret handshake model instead.

You are talking about encryption and encryption is definitely implemented in all keys. The problem is that the suitcase attack is purely a relay (man in the middle) attack. It doesn't modify or touch the signal. It simply sends whatever signal the key sends to the car and vice versa. No amount of encryption can help that.

Looks like you're right. What a great, simple solution.

The owner got fined prior to the theft for driving without front plates but he forgives them as they have found his M2 💁🏻*♂️

Yea, those guys are not smash-and-grab or opportunist thieves, they were professionals. Not sure how much active security could of prevented that theft.

I personally use this supplementary T-Mobile OBD2 tracker below, that plugs into the OBD2 port and has its own dedicated 4G LTE data connection and also doubles as a WiFi hotspot.

If anyone interferes with my vehicle or disconnects the dongle, I get an instant alert on my phone. Never fails.

I absolutely hate, HATE people who steal! I've been a victim previously as well. These douche bags should apply some of their creative knowledge and rid of this damn virus!!! Idiots!!!! Nevertheless, I'm happy you're reunited with your M2!!
