Yeah I think it was more of a sales pitch to wing me off the idea of going with a custom e85 bm3 tune. In reality I really went in there only to see if they can unlock my DME lol. They gave me some bullshit story on how they can only unlock it using their tune 😂🤣

If by that, you mean they remove the ECU, ship it off, and then put it back in when they get it back, you're correct.

There are very few shops I would trust to take apart my car. And even if "any shop" can do it, fuck 99% of shops out there.
There is no need to remove the ecu for a tune. It takes 10-15 minutes to move the intercooler and disconnect the ecu's connectors

so what, you're going to just ship your entire intake manifold off? whatever floats your boat.

Lol.. yes I laughed, I cannot lie at msdss comment.

But come on you know what he means. Some shops have the provision with a breakout harness to plug directly into the dme so it does not need to be removed. Just need the access.

Of course if the shop does not have the means then shipping is the only option for the interim (with or without the intake manifold)

I don’t think developing a solution is a priority for anyone anymore. The problem is that this engine is basically at the end of its cycle and the new M’s with the new S58 engine are due at the end of year/early next year which probably leads tuning companies to question whether they should invest money into a product that will be discontinued within a year or so.

I hope I’m wrong but my advice is that if you really want a tune, find a local shop that can bench flash the ECU and problem solved. They don’t even need to take the ECU out. In theory, any high performance dyno shop should be able to do it.

It’s not as convenient as flashing a map yourself but it’s all we’re probably going to get, unless we get lucky.

Just my 0.2 cents

There are thousands and thousands of s55s out there. Tuning will be even more popular on the used market I would think.

It’s true that there are plenty of S55’s out there but only the newest ones have the locked DME which makes them a minority. So they would need to develop a solution for basically, let’s say, 10% of the total population which can be expensive if they can’t recover the cost because there won’t be that many more sold with the DME locked before BMW stops production and the new M’s go on sale in the near future.

Anyway, I hope I’m wrong. I’d love a bm3 flash as I had it on my 435 before and it was great and crazy easy to flash. Much easier than going to a tuner every time you want to flash to stock and vice versa.

I have a local high performance BMW shop that will give me a tune worth about 60-70whp for about $900. The problem for me is that I much rather have full control over when I flash and how I flash it anytime anywhere.

Older s55s can and have been locked by dealerships updating their software. But who knows. Hope someone unlocks it.

That's a real dick move on their part and is very telling; there's obviously no solution to the OBD2 bootloader lockout issue and doesn't seem to have one anytime soon or else they would been happy to attempt to push a sale.

I'm pretty sure they were not originally active on Facebook simply just for the "likes" but to promote their product.

I'm not waiting any longer for a OBD II solution. Have an appt next week with Visconti Tuning in Westport, CT to have my DME flashed and ECUTEK installed.
Its a great product and I've used in in the past on other platforms.

Sweet. I had COBB on my GTR but a lot of people had Visconti ECUTEk and loved it

I wish there was a shop in Houston that could bench flash.

Are you worried at all about the spun crank hub issue? That’s pretty much what’s keeping me from getting a tune.

The general consensus is that tuned DCT cars are much more likely to spin a crank hub, especially ones that have a very aggressive shifting software installed.
There are tunes available that are the same as BMW. The M4CS tune at 454HP and 442 lb ft torque (actual is probably higher) for example is about the traction limit for a stock M2C IMO. I just think that the issue is overblown...oops poor choice of words 😂

No one out there can still do this. I’ve gone around asking all tuners one by one and all say the same to do the bench unlock first. It is what it is and BMW sure isn’t making it easy or a new OBD unlock would already be out there.

I don’t understand how a newer B58 can be flashed via OBD and older S55 cannot? Wouldn’t you think BMW would implement the non flashable S55 update to the B58??

Hopefully we’ll get some good news soon.
Damn that sucks. I went in for my last oil change last December and explicitly told them no updates as I have the original sw from 2018.

S55 and B58 were both locked by Bmw, but the B58 has been unlocked, the S55 not, perhaps because there is no interest in developing a solution to unlock an old platform and they devote all their energies to the new platforms (B58, S58).

Not at all...

I had the CBC installed for added Peace of Mind. Its not a 100% solution but only one car has spun one with it so far and that car was putting out a ton of HP. I believe around 800...

https://vargasturbo.com/product/vtt-...-bolt-capture/

If it does spin the odds of any valve damage are minor. Worst case is having it re-aligned to get timing back.

Your over thinking this. From a statistics perspective, Probably less than 1% spin them, then adding a CBC cuts down on that % and finally if it does spin only a small % of those actually have valve damage.
