Track Wheels and TPMS

Have a set of Apex wheels on order, to be used during track weekends. Wasn’t planning to use TPMS sensors, as I keep a close eye on pressures manually. Plus, a few threads mentioned the M2C restricts performance at lower tire pressures, unless a TPMS reset is performed.

Does anyone have first hand experience running track wheels w/o TPMS sensors? Want to insure performance isn’t restricted by going this route.

Yes, if you get a low pressure warning you cannot disable DSC. Or if you are on the track with DSC off and the pressure is "found" to be too low, you will be kicked into Comfort mode. I cannot say for sure although suspect you will need the TPMS for this reason.

Agreed. Without TPMS the system will assume you are low and force you into comfort with all nannies on.

Just get extra sensors and rest your TPMS with lower pressures.

Doesn't iDrive will give you a warning that TPMS is not detected and by clicking okay, you are accepting any and all risk?

I thought I read that.

This seems like the safest route. Now to find reasonably priced sensors...

The other advantage of doing this is being able to monitor tire temperatures in real life. I know this is just tire air temp and not thread temp, but it's still enough to warn you when the tires overheat and your grip is about to go.

I do not use tire sensors on my track wheels. While the tire light is on in the dash board, this creates zero issues with the car and selecting modes or completely turning off traction control. This is helpful since I like 28psi hot pressures which sometimes means I start in the low 20s. I just use an old school gauge to measure temps.
Hope that helps.

The TPMS gave me issues.... Even "resetting it" with low pressures it didn't like it. I was starting with 27psi or so cold... Will be pulling the sensors off the wheels

Interestingly, my TMPS was giving me no readings yesterday at the track.

Did you change wheel sets at the track and both your street and track sets have sensors?

Drove down on my track set. And yes, they both have TPMS. Calibrated when I left, but no readings ever showed.

28 hot? Seems very low. What tire?

This has happened to me once before of the 50 or so times I’ve done similar. It cleared up after I switched back to my street set and then back to my track set.

I don’t really know the reason or have a fix, but I make sure the wheel set I’m taking off is a decent distance from the car before I put the other on and then drive away a little bit to do the reset.

This may or may not have something to do with it, but I haven’t had the issue since with all the same wheels and sensors involved.

I'm using Bridgestone RE71s. I find they wear more evenly across the tread at those lower pressures. With these heavy cars you need to manage tires more with driving style though.

BTW, I'm running 265 square so I rotate front to back and left to right too.

I think you are the first person in history to be able to completely turn off DSC with an active low temp warning light. Many many M2 owners have been looking for a way to "code out", etc. the low tire temp warning. First time I have read of someone being able to achieve this by removing the TPMS, hmm.

https://machtschnell.com/tpmsrdc-emulation-module.html

For those that have multiple tire sets for the track, this is simply not practical. Our TPMS/RDC Emulation Module installs in less than 15 minutes and will fully emulate a full-pressure TPMS signal when activated. Module can be activated/deactivated by lifting up on the driver’s side window switch for +5 seconds with the key off.

Wonder if anyone has seen/tried this before? I'm finding a ton of cool stuff I never knew existed on their site.

EDIT: nvm. just seen M2 is not supported. Even thought it's listed in their M2 section.

I think this has been covered in other threads, but I had 4 sets of wheels and various tires. Sometimes I had to start at 22 pounds and the system would go limp. I tried all the “tricks” to reset on track but a real PITA. Early in my ownership I pulled the sensors and did not install TPMS on any of my track wheels. I now swap wheels, set pressures and run with DSC off with no issues. Sometimes the system will still recognize low air pressure, probably the euro default if one tire differs from the others, I guess. I did have some coding done as well.

I have a EM into them asking this question and they confirmed that the F87 is not supported by it yet..

Thanks, all, for the responses. I ordered the sensors from tpmsdotcom (as suggested), but am torn on whether to have them mounted on the EC-7’s. From what I can surmise on this (and other) threads:

1. Not using TPMS sensors on an M2C will allow the use of MDM and DSC off, but the car defaults to comfort mode...which means less steering effort (vs sport or +) and a less touchy throttle. Correct?
2. Using TPMS means I have to worry about starting pressures below 28. Attention to tpms resets. Possibly pitting after a lap to reset. The possibility of limp mode while on track. Correct? On my previous cars used at the track (911’s, GT4, Boxster GTS), 28 cold was always my sweet starting point. But this car is heavier. And the engine is in front!

Given the above, I think I’m gonna hold off on the sensors.
