Battery charger

Well I've never been confused about this...

Where do you hook up a battery charger in the m2? I only see one terminal in the engine bay. The manual is vague.

Thanks

You're not supposed to connect chargers or jump leads to the battery directly.

There are two posts under the hood, one for 12v under a red cover, and another another stud with a torx socket on top which is for ground.

Yes, that is the ground connection.

Why is that? I've never had an issue hooking a trickle charger directly to the battery in this or any other car I've ever owned.

Something to do with the electronics that manages the monitoring of the battery.

I'll take your word for it till I can find out otherwise as that makes no sense to me. The positive jumper post is wired in parallel with the battery positive terminal and the ground lug is parallel (via the chassis) to the negative terminal.

"One can either connect the battery charger by directly accessing the BMW’s battery through the trunk or via the engine compartment on the red power terminal and the ground."

I found the same thing - someone on the board asked me a similar question about the battery charger (I have one on my X6 and purchased one for the M2), so I wrote up a bit of a "how-to" with some photos.

The main takeout that I got from using the points in the engine compartment (rather than applying the charger directly to the battery) is that (1) it was faster to charge the battery, and (2) it allows the car's electronics to control the flow of the charge to the battery and protect the circuitry. There were some useful contributions in the thread from other forum members

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
