Three USA-spec M2 Competition cars were built yesterday: 1 Sunset Orange and 2 Hockenheim Silver Metallic. All three M-DCT.

Would not score that high. Remember that there were test mules of the M4 CS that supposedly had manuals. While I have no doubt it was tested, I never underestimate BMW's marketing team in their ability to screw over manual drivers.
But if any model were to get it, it would be the M2 in North America.

I think people overthink sometimes.
BMW has said for years manuals in M cars will be dictated by take rates. Manual takerate in the US for the M2 has been 54%. Competition is getting a manual, Artemis also confirmed it above but still this was pretty obvious. No way the M2 comp is coming up to M3 base price level, BMW has made it pretty clear by not offering adaptive suspension on the comp (None of the prepro mules have it). And leaving us with the basic interior leather it seems and no carbon cermanic's. They are still spacing it from the M3/M4 which means it will come in at the most 61k base price, the only thing I'm curious about is how much they are going to charge us for the brakes and seats. Also I think they want to retire the N55 due to emissions and maybe something to do with the reason the M3/4 lost it Carbon driveshaft, BMW needs to add a particulate filter to the exhaust on cars moving forward for EU regs. So maybe they didn't want to spend the money developing a filter to work on the last reminant of their last generation engine architecture. Just a random thought. |

Sure but manual take rates on M4 are still what, 34% in NA? No manual M4 CS or M3 CS. Manual rates were relatively high on the E46 CSL. No manual CSL. I fear marketing has a role to play here around acceleration times etc.
However I am ready to be pleasantly surprised. That said... what the M2 has taught me is that BMW can be pretty mysterious with their M motors. From my perspective, the N55 in the M2 feels pretty darn special, having bashed it myself for years. So it will be interesting to see what the S55 does and even more interesting to see if the B58Tu modified or S58 makes its way in. As for N55 retirement of course they want to do this but I doubt it's for emissions reasons. So many motors have been around for multiple emissions rule changes. Take the EJ257 for example. It isn't particularly difficult to keep up. I think the real reason is it was a compromised motor from day 1 and simply doesn't meet BMWs expectations. B58 much more scaleable (up and down, as we've already seen with new 35i and 40i and M40i) with better cooling.

If you look up a VIN for a DCT only car, for instance the M4 GTS. (2MK)M DCT is list under “standard” section. I would definitely say manual transmission will be standard equipment, like the current M2. Last edited by hellrotm; 11-16-2017 at 01:43 AM.. |
