PNP Bypass Harness Installed w/Impressions

Over the weekend, I finally got around to installing the ASD PNP Bypass Harness - $55. I have bimmercode as well, but decided that I'd rather completely eliminate the ASD signal with the bypass as opposed to coding it out.

The install was actually quite easy and only took about 15 minutes to do. I followed the video directions from Bavsound and removed the trunk loading sill cover. It made the install that much easier.

I also zip tied the harness and placed some velcro (soft loop side) under the it as I noticed it could bounce and rattle on the metal floor.

Impressions:

Wow! Honestly this is how the car should come from the factory. It's crazy how much fake engine noise was pumped in through the speakers. With the windows up and the stereo off, the car is almost eerily quiet. Under hard acceleration you can definitely hear the exhaust, but it is way more muted. I can also hear the intake sound whereas before I didn't even know it was there.

On the highway the car is so much quieter. No more fake exhaust drone!

I would highly recommend installing this part.

This weekend I'll be installing the Bimmer-tech audio system (amp, all speakers and subs) and will have a review posted on it as well.

I had the bypass on my OG N55 M2 with MPE and it was definitely worth it. If you're running an aftermarket exhaust setup, ASD needs to go off because it's out of synch and will enhance drone.

This said, on M2C with stock setup, keeping ASD on is not the end of the world. I'm not a fan of the artificial sound but I can't say the overly quiet cabin is a big upgrade. Installing REMUS exhaust soon and that's when ASD off sounds like a good idea.

I've tested passengers with ASD turned on and many have mentioned how much they like the exhaust note without having any idea it's mostly fake noise.

But still, ASD off with the AA midpipe and valves open is a huge improvement that doesn't drone on the highway.

Does nobody else get nervous of voiding the factory warranty when doing this?

I coded ASD out with bimmercode app and I was shocked how quiet sport + was when driving.

I then unplugged the exhaust flaps in the open position because car was tooo quiet. Sport + does not necessarily mean exhaust flaps are open. So I have them open 100% all the time now.

You don’t void warranty by coding or doing the harness bypass.

How did you unplug the flaps?

I'm pretty sure it is as simple as disconnecting the plug on both sides of the exhaust (see item 10 where it plugs in).

If I'm not mistaken though, you can also code them to be open all the time in Bimmercode or iCarly.

Make sure the flaps are open. Press sport + and tap on the throttle this opens the exhaust flap. Just pressing Sport + does not open flaps. So make sure they are open. Once they are open climb under the car and remove the connector from the actuator. Use zip ties to tie the connector away from the exhaust and I used electrical tape to seal off the ends of the electrical connections to prevent from dirt entering these areas. No tools required.

Car is noticeably louder now when ASD is off. I can actually hear the exhaust now even on the freeway when driving. But still quieter than ASD, ASD emits so much fake noise it’s really alarming. Can’t believe bmw does that and makes people believe it’s engine noise. Pathetic.

I can second that regarding the AA midpipe with the ASD harness installed. No drone whatsoever.

They do it because newer materials used to make the car have better sound dampening, not to mention new safety standards that also lead to the unintended consequence of more dampening. They are doing it to try to give the driver some sound feedback back that was taken away. Just like almost every other car manufacture does now. I feel like I would hate BMW more if they didn't have ASD and had the exhaust flaps from factory making my car no louder than a Prius. But that's me.

Would have been nice if they gave the option to shut it off. I do hear some droning noise on the highway. I thought it was the (real) exhaust. I've got the MPe.

You can also activate all the sound and burbles by just pressing the traction control button and using paddles. It's an Easter egg on OG M2's.

Don't you want to have the traction control.... for those times you're not prepared for?

I believe you can also have the exhaust flap open using BM3. Pls correct me if I'm wrong.

I coded mine out for free with E-Sys. You can do so many other things with E-sys, may as well get that set up.

I echo the other comments. It's much more quiet in the cabin, you no longer need to raise your voice on the highway to talk to passengers, and you can still hear the S58 sound. A+, would totally recommend.

Though, the way the ASD sounded combined with the S58 was downright raunchy and naughty. I "liked" the noise, but not all the time and at the volume it was at. It was hard not to do stupid things with ASD enabled

I added the harness to a catless M235i I bought- the drone was just brutal on the freeway and even worse in comfort than in sport somehow. I bought one for my M2 (stock exhaust) preemptively, thinking I’d want it again. And I don’t. ASD on the car stock is great and fills out the exhaust note nicely IMO.
