Questiong regarding rear diff. whining noise

Hi guys, M power newbie here, just picked up my 2017 M2 DCT with 18000km last month. The car drives great and everything is wonderful. However, I can't help but notice this whining noise coming from the rear of my M2 when the car is either slowly coming to a dead stop or slowly starting to drive. I have also noticed these weird "thumbing" noises from the rear as well. My last car before the M2 was an Audi S3 and never heard anything like this before. A friend with a 2019 M2C told me this is normal, which made me wonder. Because I have driven rear wheel drives before (2003 350Z manual) and never heard similar noises before.

Can anyone here shed some light?

Thanks

This is normal. It's the sound of the M Differential. I have this sound too from the first day with 0 mileage.

Hi

From personal experience and what I have read on many posts in different forums this is absolutely normal.

Yup, I was surprised by the noise as well. Coming from my 2008 128i, I was not used to a noticeable diff, but this is just a totally normal function of the M2's more aggressive diff.

I had many older scoobies with diff whine/clunk - they were considered normal. Never thought our M2s would replicate similar whine!

Yep as others stated. Normal.
And going forward don't be too alarmed by other random clunks or vibrations either.
This chassis was not built to reduce NVH at all.

Also welcome to the best M car ownership!

128i & 135i have open differential

So no limited slip differential only a one leg wonder

Also, since the car is used, I'm thinking about changing the differential fluid to Motul Gear 300LS SAE 75W90, which is what I always use for all my other cars. Does anyone here know the specification of the factory gear lubrication?

Check your manual for fluid specs

Yea that's true but it could still put down two even rear tire track marks and some smoky burnouts, even with its pseudo-LSD setup..

Actually I take that partially back... The 135i had a quasi-e differential

That's what accommodated the hooligan inside of you

Admit it, you overheated, took a picture and then told everyone you were doing a burnout.

Some may be normal but I know some early 2016 and 2017 models had a recall on the rear diff that may be worth checking into with your dealer to see if you're car is affected.

He He

Nah, that little nugget of a car was really good to me, it's the reason I became an avid fan of BMW. Despite its one-wheel-peel of a differential.

That was day before I was taking It back on a lease return, so I let all my friends on the block run a burnout train on that bitch, while I recorded.

I can't say it did too well with the second owner; as I ran a vehicle history on it, two years after it was gone and I discovered that it was reported stolen and it was later found but burn to the ground.

So, now I don't feel too bad about a few burnouts.

The differentials are very sensitive so I'd double check which fluid you change too. Also the correct weight is 75w140. 75w90 was the spec for the prior gen differentials and unfortunately it was a common mistake for dealers to put in early on.

Thanks, I read another post here on the forum regarding rear differwntial.oil and it said the correct oil to use for the F87 M2 is as stated below? Or Castrol Syntrex?

INFORMATION
For the M2 (F87), M3 (F80) and M4 (F82, F83) vehicles, ONLY use:

Synthetic MPS/A BMW Final Drive Gear Oil (PN 83 22 2 357 992, 1 liter) during a 1,200 ml. Maintenance Service or after a differential replacement.

Sorry for the delayed response, you can use the OEM fluid or Castrol, I went with Castrol and have been very happy.

I just test drove a car on Sunday, and was very concerned about the whine from the rear. I've driven quite a few vehicles with lsd's and never noticed it.

I'm happy I came across. (in the process of trying to complete the sale now)

I am also glad that I came here to sniff around in this M2 forum.
Car has 25500km and I also heard a very slight wining when testing the car but I clearly don't need to worry anymore after reading this thread, great!
