M2C Rattle - Solved Tie Rod Failure - Videos
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I’m wondering if anyone has experienced the rattle in this video? It’s apparent at lower speeds over drains, rough roads and bumps. I can’t feel it through the steering wheel, but it sounds like it’s coming from the steering wheel column. I’ve seen a few other posts about a buzzing fix but this doesn’t sound the same. Any help would be appreciated! Last edited by thmas; 07-01-2021 at 02:17 PM.. Reason: Video doesn’t display - Fixed |

Check out my post it might be helpful for you:
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1819548 Unfortunately from your video I can't tell if it's the same rattle I have, I also tried recording a video of my rattle and the sound of the rattle is hard to get on video.

Thanks for the link, it's a strange one. Cars gone in for oil change and they're going to 'investigate' the sound. Just annoying as it's so prominent over bumps and something like a cobble road would cause it to rattle loads.
It doesn't sound like it's coming from the suspension, almost sounds hollow. |

If you can't feel it in the wheel, I'm suspicious that it isn't coming thru steering. I find that I can feel fairly minute things thru the wheel (like a water bottle rolling back hard into the tub from under passenger seat), so doubtful you'd have a rattle that you didn't feel. These cars throw sound like crazy, so it may just be that it sounds like that but is coming from rear or other chassis pieces? Try seeing if a passenger also hears it, and from where (those directional stethoscope tools can be very helpful, but leave that for passenger).

It's in with the dealer at the moment for service and inspection. There is nothing in the car, water bottles etc.. it was the first thing I checked. It's like a rattle, sounds like something is loose somewhere.

It’s the tie rod! Not sure what’s going on with it, the bolt which secured it in place is tight but it seems to flex in the middle.

Thanks for getting back to us, will you replace the whole tie rod or only the bolt? Did you already replace it and the rattle stopped? I will get mine checked in case it is the same.
