If it is a waxy sticky substance it is not oil, but leftover protectant they clean off at the port.

^ This!

When I saw this stuff in the engine bay of my F30 couple years ago, it scared me a lot as I thought there was oil everywhere. It turned out it was the protectant wax they use during shipping.

Yeah I suspect is the cosmoline they coat the cars in during ocean transit. I would wipe it down and see if it comes back.

There's a lot of goo down there I noticed as well. My turbo did indeed have oil seepage near the inlet but that's normal for break-in period.
It is advisable to add an sealed "catch can" to the system though.

I thought the S55 turbochargers leak a bit of oil by nature?

The PCV in my CDI dumps the oil directly in front of the turbo inlet. Seems to be the nature of most modern turbo engines these days without an external catch can of sorts.

Brake clean and rag everything off until it's spotless up to the inlet. Drive it and keep an eye on it.

Or take it to the dealer but I bet they will say it's normal and will clean it for you which I suppose can save time and you have it documented.

There's a post around here with the same issue. If I recall the dealer said it was normal because of how the oil venting is routed. I'll see if I can find it

The dealer claimed that this is 'normal' as blow-off from the turbos but honestly I wouldn't be pleased if my new vehicle is leaking any fluid except condensation from the exhaust..

Turbo leaking, but dealer says nothing is wrong https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1545217

The best way to track and oil leak is to clean it thoroughly with brake cleaner and then spray it with body powder and drive it . It will show you exactly where it's coming from ..carl

Is this what causes the waxy burn smell during break-in?

Defective fuel rail sensor 1,250 miles. And to think I avoided the Alfa because of reliability fears.

Never noticed any burning smell in any of my previous BMWs during or after the break-in.

I know what you're talking about; it smells like a combo of a plastic bag burning, mixed with the new car smell. It's potent for the first few hundred miles, then it dies down.

I've experienced this odor in a few new vehicles, including some brand new loaner cars.

I always assumed it was the clutch and brake pads breaking in.. But learning about the corrosion inhibitors that BMW uses, it actually makes more sense..

You learn something new here everyday..
