Carvana 21 M2 LBB from Kansas - PO maybe Mark?
So I am currently in the market for an M2 and saw one on Carvana. It just showed up today and I was curious if the previous owner (possibly Mark or Torriy from the names stored in the car) were on the forum.
I know the car was registered in Wichita or Derby Kansas. Vin WBS2U7C09M7G98859 At first glance it seemed fine and I was surprised the whole front has PPF but once it got dark and I was able to shine my light on the paint - it looks like there has been driver rear quarter panel paint work. It looks like there are some pin holes in the paint. So I was just curious about what happened with the car. Carfax is a clean 1 owner serviced at BMW Wichita. Thought it was a long shot but figured I would post and see. I’ve been able to find previous owners (also car enthusiast )of my last couple cars ( ZL1 and my C7) so it was nice to get more information on what was or wasn’t done with the car. |

no idea whos car it is, but I'd send it back to Carvana if you still can. It has obviously been in an accident, and it clearly hasn't been repaired properly. Hard pass for me.

That bodywork plus a clean carfax equals fraud somewhere. If you just bought it, then it would be grounds to cancel the sale (my suggestion), or get a hefty rebate based upon actual worth. If you are still shopping it, then walk away. Any place willing to do bodywork under the radar won't hesitate to do substandard work with poor quality materials, especially if they left it like that. If it is already looking like that, it won't be long before it really goes to hell - not that hard to get a decent looking finish, but without some time-consuming work in preparation it won't last a year before it starts to bubble up, flake off, or otherwise fail. And that's not even considering what the impact might have damaged in the chassis, rear suspension/diff/bearings etc.

Carfax states that they do get info from bodyshops (and if you order parts w/ VIN#), but not every shop will report every accident. So to stay off carfax it also needs no mention to police or insurance. Whoever checked the 'no accidents or body damage' box for Carvana was comitting very intentional fraud. Any bodyshop (or high-school BOCES student) who would leave a car in that condition is telegraphing that they did substandard and incompetent work; likely it will cost quite a bit to redo it to acceptable standards, and it has significantly reduced the value of the car.
I also believe that materially misrepresenting a serious (and obvious) defect like this would be grounds to cancel a sale. But I'm not an attorney, and if OP already paid for this car, he should be consulting with one of those ASAP. I bet they would rather cancel the sale and try again, rather than have this go public. |

Doesn't caravana(and similar services) offer a return policy? I think it's 7 days from delivery. So really the only issue to haggle over is who pays the shipping costs. Normally the buyer returning the car would. In this circumstance I would request the seller eat the cost due to misrepresentation.
Edit: And yes — get rid of that car asap unless you got a substantial discount to fix that substandard paint and body work. It will look like hell in a few years if not properly remedied. |

Understanding CARFAX's uses and limitations is important when buying a used car. The only thing it is good for is the information it contains — not what it does not.
The vast majority of the information Carfax reports comes from service and body shop CRM/DMS systems that are integrated with CARFAX. Not all of them are. It is not fraudulent not to report to CARFAX; they are a private company that profits from collecting information from companies for free and then selling it back to them, much like Credit Reporting. For example, If you borrow a few thousand dollars from a friend, and don't pay them back, it's not going to effect your credit and Experian is not committing fraud. Your friend simply does not have the tools to report that bad debt or chooses not to. Hopefully this clears up some confusion. Your beef here is with CARVANA.

Yes Carvana has the 7 day / 400 mile return policy which is the only reason I thought I’d try them. They come this weekend to pickup the car and I won’t have to worry about anything so that’s the good part. I let them know about the damage and I’ll be curious to see if it comes back up on their website.
I at least enjoyed driving it some while it’s here. Now the search continues. |

I mean, it depends on your tolerance for risk and what you think happened. If that's the only repainted panel then I wouldn't be too put off other than the quality of the job. You can't really get into a serious accident and damage just one panel.
My rear quarter is about to be repainted because a freaking pane of glass fell on it while parked, lol. |

Carvana ended up picking the car up and did a return. No money out of pocket for me so I’m not mad about the situation.
I can see how they could’ve missed it if no one really looked over the car and I’m sure the previous owner said there was no damage or repairs and carfax can only show what’s reported to them. It’ll be interesting to see where the car ends up since I doubt they will sell it through the website again. |

I forgot I still had the bmw app on my phone so I was curious where the M2 ended up a few days after returning it. Turns out Carvana has a Paint facility and it’s currently sitting in a huge parking lot there.

https://www.carvana.com/vehicle/2573498 ^this one has been sitting for a couple weeks. there is a big circular scratch or scuff on the left side of rear plate. i asked carvana about it any the basic reply was 'they would have documented it if it was anything major'. they can't even send someone to go look at it and take better pics.

Funny…I was just looking at this car on Carvana and googled the VIN, and this thread was a result. It appears as though they’ve relisted it, with no mention of OP’s findings. Just goes to show…don’t use Carvana.

They are no different than any other dealer. They do not need to tell you what they did to any vehicle. It is not their responsibility to find all flaws in any given car. It's no different than when BMW has to do some paint work at the port. It is not reported until a certain dollar amount is met and it will never be on Carfax. To high volume car remarketers any used car is just a hunk of metal and plastic to make a buck on. I remember back in the day when I walked around the auctions with a magnet and a paint meter.
