I think society would be much better off without Facebook, Twitter, Tik Tok, etc…but keeping Bimmerpost alive and well.

I never joined FB, but I really do enjoy all the true BMW and car enthusiasts on BP!

I've been on forums since the early 2000s. My first car was a Ford Explorer, and the Explorer Forums were incredibly busy in 2004 when I started driving, we're talking 100s of threads per day for a mundane SUV. Discussions were cordial with much less snarkiness than today (but still had your occasional shithead or two). There's no doubt that social media changed forums, and our overall communication style as human beings, for the worse (my opinion of course).
But I digress, as I'm starting to sound like an old man. I'll go shout at some clouds now. |

It doesn't help that the forums are divided between OG, C, and CS I'd say. Plus, a good chunk of the latest owners are CS owners. It seems like 75% of the CS owners on that sub are only interested in circle jerking about values on BAT and whatever the hyperbolic headlines from the British press say about their car. Sometimes it feels like they are not interested in engaging with the rest of the forum and don't notice their cars share 99% of components with other F87.

M2 forums were once united but now they're unnecessarily divided

I think it's just the way these forums evolve. First there is a lot of excitement over a new upcoming model. Then the superiority complex over previous models causes forum banter. Then the not so serious members drop off of the forum. That leaves the hard core enthusiasts that already know a lot about their cars. The forum gets more quiet after the car is out of production and there are fewer newbies.
Next will be the release of the G87. If that forum stays separate from the F87 forum, I think it will stay relatively quiet around here. Of course all it takes is for one good troll to stir the pot again! |

Speaking for myself: contributed often in the 1M section, M2 section, M2C section and M2 CS section.
Many topics have already been dealt with. Lots of info is still out there in the vaults. But in general, gradually the tone changed over time. To some extent the demographic changed - people leave, people move on, people come. Views sometimes got/get more polarizing. Discussions sometimes spun/spin out of control either as a result of personal attacks by some, or as a result of criticism perceived by some as personal attacks. Try to imagine how those very conversations would (d)evolve when folks were sitting face-to-face in a bar, rather than fuming (c.q. trolling) behind their keyboards and monitors. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the 'Politics & Religion' section of Bimmerpost became quite a toxic cesspool. Many went 'no holds barred'. The whole section got taken offline, for all the right reasons (see here).

Ive been in 3 different bimmerpost forums. F30/32, f80/82, and f87. I will definitely say that the m2 forums (all 3) are far less populated, contain less info, and in general, less conversations.
Makes sense. There's less of our cars. I bet the m8 forum is even quieter. I am still able to find most of the info I've ever searched for though.

I've frequented this forum pretty much daily since I've bought my M2, but rarely post since I don't have much to contribute at the moment. It does look like recent newcomers (myself included) missed the hype, as the majority of the build threads and mods are already well documented and fully reviewed from several years ago. The vanguards of the f87 generation seem to have either finished their builds and are content, or have simply moved on to newer stuff, which is expected at this point. That being said, I do appreciate the ones who still stick around and provide helpful feedback for those of us who are just getting started on our F87 journey.
