I maybe a private but I don't agree with the General....the M235i...appeals to more then the M2 hopeful fan...when one reads the reviews posted on the M235i..and more are being published as release date is near..the M235i is going to a great seller..and not everyone wants to pay the additional M2 pricing....M2 will be more limited production run ..CNET review clearly states ..even questions the need for an M2..but of course they may not be interested in autobahn speeds outside of Utah and Texas..my opinion.......

really a blanket statement that the M235i will just go away....that is a broad statement that requires specific logical facts to come to that conclusion....

Funny........... The n55 has "beet" the n54 plenty of times. I've seen 0-60 times of 4.4, 4.6, 4.7 which is consistently quicker than 335i's with n54. It's also been shown to be faster from 100-150 mph by over a second. My 335i with the MPPK and dinan exhaust to me feels stronger and revs quicker and smoother than my 07 335i, and also the z4 35i"s" I drove at the BMW performance center with the more powerful n54. You guys shit on the n55 like it's some shitty budget rental car fleet engine that's cheap and outdated yet it smokes all the cars in its class (335i guise) in drivetrain performance with the exception of the lovely s4. At the performance center these 335i msports were brutally pushed very hard for extended periods of time with no loss of power and no cooling issues at all. Same goes for people who track their f30/32's. Can't say the same for the n54. Even the instructors said they are glad they don't have those issues with the n55. The n55 is a much more reliable engine. Let's face it, the n54 had its fair share of cooling and fuel delivery problems. Not near as much with the n55. It's a very powerful, advanced, extremely efficient engine. Sure it should have been updated by now and is less mod friendly than the n54 but mostly because of valvetronic. It's no stronger internally. It's never been shown to have any forged internals when torn down so I don't know where all the "stronger internals" phrase that constantly gets thrown around comes from. It's no M engine but let's be realistic and give proper credit when it's due. Saying the n55 is a shitty engine is just really really ignorant. I'm certain an M2 with a nicely massaged n55 to say 375 HP and a proper LSD would be amazing. There is no denying that. I don't give a shit if it's a "regular" BMW turbo straight six. If that even exists.

My 98 cents. Fire away, I'm out. Thanks for reading.

Mixed thoughts. On one hand there is apparent confirmation of an M2, on the other they they may go with the n55, which I know the M235i boys are gonna say, "all I have to do is reflash blah, blah, blah..." and it doesn't lend itself to being "special", with a 4 cyl. turbo putting 360-380 hp, besting the CLA 45 AMG (unless there is a black model), I think that is special enough. Plus it would probably be lighter up front than the I6 turbo.

You are forgetting that the N55 cars have slightly better gearing for acceleration vs the N54 cars. Its not just the engine, but the drive train package. The N55 with the sport 8AT ZF trans is an awesome package/duo.

It comes from BMW's own datasheets clearly stating that for instance the N54 has a forged crankshaft while the N55 hasn't.

http://prodcds.bmwuniversity.com/lib...Mechanical.pdf

(see page 9) - it says the crankshaft is made from forged steel

http://prodcds.bmwuniversity.com/lib...nformation.pdf

(see page 22) - it says the crankshaft is 3kg lighter and made from cast iron. This partly explains why the N55 revs more freely.

Although running closer to its limits from factory, the N55 is obliviously more advanced and builds torque quicker and hence both feels and is stronger at the very lowest rpms. And all of this comes with an improvement in mpg and quality. It is a fantastic engine - no doubt.

But let's not forget that the N54 is still in production, and featuring a true dual exhaust in both the LCI Z4 35i and 35is. So both the N54 and N55 are still in production.

All N55 and N58 engines will be replaced, and S55 apparently shares little with the N55. Alpina will probably probably keep their twin-turbo N55.

The N54 found in the 1M was first meant in the Z4 M, and was indeed slightly modified by M, but not fully rebuilt. If the 1M had no real M engine, it is because it was a last minute development. It had no CF rood, no long option list and so on. The goal with the M2 was initially to have a new true M model added to M3/M4, M6/M6 and X5/X6 M.

If the M2 does not get an "Sxx" engine, it is not a true BMW M. Before the 1M came, there were already some 135i owners that swapped M3 suspension on their 135i and had that 1M handling.

Looks like many on here do not know what an M really is, thanks to BMW putting M badges on every possible car.

@Levi, a true M car is a big heavy expensive pig which eats fronttyres and brakes for breakfast at only a few laps at a trackday. With a fantastic bespoke engine which doesn't suit the heavy car irl...

Not a true M car is a parts bin car with just an AG engine, but with crisp handling, agility and fun, a lot lighter and smaller. Plus power galore at any moment.

Cheers

There are some extremely insecure posters in this thread

So first a large group of people are upset it might come with 4 cylinders, it probably won't now. Now we need to be upset that the 6 cylinder engine it will receive isn't the right one? Madness. I'm crossing my fingers that they will continue to troll everyone and name it the 2 Series M Coupe.

But in all seriousness I do hope they don't limit production to only one model year again, they have plenty of time to do this right.

Here is the statement of @Scott26 (Nov 5, 2013) Dackel was likely referring to:
"I have seen some early preliminary sketches although not respondent of what the car [M2] will look like but the creativity behind the visual aspects is underway.
Engineering has already commenced.
But I must repeat there will be an M2 but it is not coming tomorrow.
For now this is the M235i's moment. The gap in both cars between will allow appetites to be wet and new ideas to be conceived and thoroughly evaluated.
The gap will also allow the new M3 and M4 breathing space.
"

http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showp...&postcount=140
Whether the M235i will be pulled once the M2 is released, remains to be seen (and BMW will also keep an eye on how M235i sales evolve - remember how they reviewed the 2700 figure 'en cours de route' for the 1M and in the end squeezed out 6309 cars due to high public demand).

But the purpose of the M235i for now is to bridge time to the future coming of the M2. Expect no M2 at the dealerships before 2016 (even if the M2 project would be ready earlier) to protect 'hurting' M3/M4 sales.

Are the engines that different? Because i cant stand the n55. It feels like it doesnt pull at the track.
+1 on the N55 - it just doesn't compare to the experience I had with my original N54.

Which was another step below the S54 in my dad's Z4MC. Now THAT was an engine.

Regardless of which engine they put in the M2, I can't wait to see the production version. I have my sights set on M3/M4 but If they can make M2 at about 3300lbs, I just might have to change my plan for my next car.

It better be less than 3,300-lbs because the new M3/M4 weighs that...

Best post yet,

Also, I made a 1M and M3 forum,
go debate there. I am stoked to see a M2 just worried about pricing.

I think they are all great, but I do see what you are saying and agree in that the N54 had a rawness to it that was something special. That being said in the M235 with that tuned version, it's no slouch and outperforms. My only thing was, that I was definitely breaking the stock PSS's loose . The car needs wider rears.

In the same way your 135is is much better than the M235i i suppose

Depends...do you want to feel the road and hear the engine or do you want to play a PS4 game?

Man I think the car to have then is the 1M.. at least you get hydraulic power steering. I can't imagine a large performance difference between the M2 and M235i.

The M2 better come with some serious cooling upgrades if that N55 is meant to put a serious day at the track in.

The four Cylinder Which I have talked about since last year is a proposal for an entry 2er which following in the 2002 will resurrect the infamous Tii badge and reverse Turbo designation. Think of entry point for those that can't reach the M2.

Nice! Bringing back the Tii! Will there be any other weight savings other than the engine?
