Remember that some of what we were told in initial M2 marketing materials (closed deck block, etc.) turned out to be false. The M2's N55B30T0 is a standard M2 with baffled oil pan, new oil drain pump, exhaust manifold, intake along with forged crankshaft, connecting rods, and different piston rings. It's a pretty extensive upgrade over a standard N55, for sure, but the engine was first an N55 and then it was upgraded by M for its new higher power output and made better suited for life at high speeds and high cornering G in the M2 so what they said is true.
Thanks for the comparison between the 'civil' and M2 version of M2. These are numerous and pretty significant changes. I do not understand BMW policy to put the M2 engine into X4 but not to some sportier bodies like 3 Series and create for example 335is back then. Now with N55 being almost completely retired it does not make sense anymore, but about 3 years ago it would have been a good idea.

OK ... they need to get someone who can speak English for the English-speaking world ... if they are trying to market to the right buyers.

That's interesting - I had never known the M2 engine code is used for the X4.

Do you happen to know what's different in the engines used for both bodies?

Damn BMW marketing! For some reason I'm lusting for one now...I just didn't get turned on the first time around with the F87. Cars have always been an emotional purchase for me, gotta feel it.

That's a real M engine. Now we have the real M2 that we were waiting for. I am first on my dealer's list and can't wait to get this car.

That's because this was not a marketing video. If you look at the video directly on YouTube you'll see it says Unlisted, meaning you will not be able to find the video via search. This appears to be an internal video that was leaked. At the end of the video the following is displayed.

BMW GROUP TRAINING ACADEMY.
QUALIFICATION AND RETAIL HR.

If so, I'm sold on that alone! I hated the digital gauges in the M2 I drove and if the Comp has analog, I'm in!

*This may sound like sarcasm, but I'm dead serious - I want analog gauges, not digital crap.
the Speedo tach is analogue in all versions of the m2, but the lci is backlit, which looks digital to the untrained eye.

You can't exactly call it "leaked" if it's posted by BMW themselves on their own channel...

Call it whatever, point is it was only meant for people that know the URL. Otherwise you cannot find the video via search, try.

Also, notice the upload date of April 23.

it's this kind of marketing spin that makes me say.. why.. why you gotta talk down the old model to sell the new one?

that's just sleazy
I mean, technically it's true. The original M2 has an N55 with some parts changed by M to suit their needs while the S55 is an engine developed from the beginning by M. I didn't read that so much as a slight against the N55 (which I have had in multiple cars and am a big fan of) and more an explanation of why the two engines have different wording on their engine cover.

The video appears to be a product video that would be shown to sales people.

When did I say what they said wasn't true ? :

I said it lacked class that they felt they need to sell the M2 comp by denigrating aspects of their own previous product in the original M2.

While detuned, I think it quite likely that the S55 was "optimized" for the M2C. It has a smaller wheel base and the torque comes on a little bit later...hopefully traction is enhanced.

That was a low blow by BMW to current M2 owners.
