I think it really depends on what the main goal of BMW is with the M2 - will it be light, sporty, and raw? Or will it be not quite as big, heavy, or powerful as the M3/4?

And I didn't konw that about the 2015 M235 - that's interesting.

I doubt that they even make the M235 once the M2 comes out - I think it will just be a 235...

definitely agree. I want something a little more raw, but still with some BMW creature comforts.

My M135i with M Performance Exhaust sounds great. M2 shouldn't need Akrapovic to sound good.

Hmm I was at The Ring yesterday (and the next week and a half). Guess it was before tourist driving started.
Today I was before it opened for public and there were several BMW's and Audi's in camouflage testing and I caught two BMW prototype's in traffic.

Gonna have a lookout for the M2.

Then the M2 risks to disappoint you. But don't exclude the possibility of BMW releasing someday a limited edition hardcore M2: the M2 CSL. Think along the lines of Porsche's RennSport series (RS).

Now an M2 CSL would just be absolutely INSANE!!
Power of the M2+11KW and the lightness of the M235i Racing. And a manual gearbox.

FWIW: July 2014 renders of the M2 (published by the Dutch car magazine 'AutoWeek'), so before the August spy shots revealing the latest changes.

With an orange body color, things are getting more into the (right) groove.

Looks really good. I think I like this version of the bumper better, but we'll just have to wait and see as the camo comes off. That rear end is the business though. A CF trunk spoiler would also look great.

P.S I hope they offer even crazier colors on the M2. LBB is a great start

Yes, I risk dissapointment for sure. The thing that drives me me nuts is that just let us configure the car the way we want. Let us order the manual seats (lighter) and no idrive and alcantara/cloth stuff. With the exception of idrive these options are available on the M235i in Europe but in USA we don't get those choices. If BMW just gave us those ordering options, that would solve so much. Let me order an M2 as light as possible or even 235i.

Now a CSL version.....holy smokes.....I'm all in for that. Unfortunately the coolest CSL ever came with a DSG gearbox, but if we can get a CSL M2....let me know where I send my first-born to.

Whilst those renders are inspired by the M4 and M3 .
The 1er M Coupe did start the ball rolling for the latest "function over form" for aerodynamics. And the M2 will also introduce progress on this theme.

I agree about the cloth or alcantara option. I'd pick that long before the Sensatec fake leather they have on offer, and save me a few bucks while doing it. I'd also go with manual seats as well.

Hopefully we'll get the cloth seats from the M3. I'd be OK with that.

Here's to some speculation:

If the M2 turns out to be a hit - and who are we to doubt that - I guess that it may cross the minds of some at BMW M to look into the option of conceiving a CSL version (Coupé Sport Leichtbau = Leightweight Sports Coupé): a street-legal hardcore M2 with the bare essentials and low on options choices (e.g. M carbon-ceramic brakes), capable of stunning and frustrating the competition.

If BMW keeps the volumes low/limited, it could even take the bold decision to sell these at a 'premium' price within the near vicinity of M3/M4 territory. The market exists - enthusiasts and collectors are prepared to pay top-dollar for a limited edition pocket-rocket (that they likely won't use as daily driver).

See also for example http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=800184

By the way, back in the day, the fairly exciting idea of a 1M CSL or 1M GTS was short-lived. I guess that BMW M decided that it lacked time and budget, but that it committed to reconsider the feasibility of a CSL version with a future model (M2, F2X M).

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not really into that sort of thing. I'm not talking about the car itself, but the way that thing would be priced if it does come to the market. Take a look at the M3 GTS for example. They cost more than GT3's even!

At the end of the day, the US wouldn't get an M2 CSL anyway, so I don't think too much about those things. Not to mention I'd ever consider dropping $8200 on brakes either.

I would be 100% happy with a "normal" M2 that had some CF parts already, and almost no options. Well I take it back, I'd be even happier if it had a detuned S55, but can't have it all.

How often does one have to replace standard BMW brakes and how much does it cost? My thinking is if it has to be done every 30,000 miles, it can add up. Ceramic brakes are supposedly good for up to 200,000 from what I have read.

It completely depends how you drive. I had stock pads last well past 50k on my old E46. But if you track a lot, then you'll need pads and rotors.

At $8200, you'll have to go through a hell of a lot of brakes before you brake even with CCB, thus why it's not worth it to me at all. I'm sure they'll come down in price eventually though.

are we still talking about CCB on CSL? who would take a CSL to 200,000kms? and worry about $8000 anyway if he/she wants one

How soon before production starts on a specific model do they usually announce full specs and pricing? Looking to see around when both will be revealed for the M2 next year.

What's funny is that I don't see any sign of fender vents in the most recent spy shots. Anyone know the deal with that? Cheers

BMW has all but ruled out any more CSL versions. Better chance of getting an M2 GTS with carbon fiber roof, trunk, hood, drive shaft and a detuned S55. Wont be until the second or third year though until BMW can guage demand and most certainly will be a year or two after the M4 GTS is released.

I was very close to putting down a deposit on an M4. Now I'm not so sure! I think the current 4-series is a bit too large for my taste, but I don't want a significant drop-off in performance.

I guess we'll see!
