BMW M2 on Track...not sure it was good

It wasn’t good....it was great!!! What a car, seriously, what a car.

I am from the UK and so took my car on the f1 silverstone track last weekend, I was quite excited to see the difference in performance from my old rs3 8v stage 2 around the track vs my stage 2 m2. It is completely night and day. The more you push the m2 the better it got around the bends. I was surprised too that the stock brakes held up fine too.

I am definitely going to be trying to get some more track days going now I’ve had a taste, what good brake fluid and pads are good for these cars with occasional track days?

Stock fluid is the weakest point of the stock brake system. But all fluid is the same when new and not pushed hard enough. Stock pad the next weakest. Rotor is fine by the most though.

This varies hugely individual by individual. But the order (Fluid -> pad -> rotor -> caliper) remains.

Keep in mind M4 CS (a heavier car albeit on another performance level) comes factory standard with the same brake system.

I tracked with better pads and after 3-4 session the stock brake fluid was toast and I lost like a HUGE amount of pedal firmness.

I have flushing with Gulf R1000 today.

My combo of ATE 200 fluid and the Ferodo DS2500 seems good enough for 7/10 driving and can daily the car with no issues. After about 4 track days I am down to a little less than half life on the front pads so something to think about being that the pads don't really break the bank.

Agreed! It's a fun car around the track. I'm surprised that your stock pads and fluids held up. That was the first upgrade I made when I started tracking the M2.

The grip of the car + my RE71R's is just awesome. I always walk away with a huge smile on my face. Almost every event I have somebody come up and compliment the sound as well! MPE FTW

The OE pads with fresh fluids will probably be enough for most people, but if you are on a track that is high speed with brutal turns (think Road America) then you may need something stronger. For a good learning track like Roebling Road or even VIR, you'll probably be fine with the stock stuff, at least for novices.

Of course, I'm the guy who gets up to about 100 MPH on the straights and just cruises (you don't learn anything going in a straight line) until the end, so I'm rather easy on brakes.

I also use ATE 200 fluid and RS-29 (on track) works perfect!

I know that everyone has different goals and driving styles, but no one should track with stock pads and fluids.....you will get fade and a soft petal. As an instructor/advanced driver I can tell when my brakes need a cool down lap, but the Novice will panic and have an off. You are correct that pushing the right pedal to go fast is not a "skill" , but hauling the M2 down from 150mph to 60 for a hard left at 10a does require both driver skill and a great car with proper brakes.
